Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes takes to the road on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves look to move back to .500 in WHAC play when they battle Madonna. The Gray Wolves will then have a week off from action before returning to the pitch on Oct. 11.
Head Coach Jackie Donovan: In her third season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Donovan has a 16-25-3 (.398) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Madonna holds a 2-0 series advantage dating back to Sept. 30, 2015, with both previous meetings taking place at Wildcat Stadium. Last season the Crusaders scored a 2-0 win over Lourdes after downing the Gray Wolves 3-0 in the first all-time meeting.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Aquinas scored in the 17th minute and added two more goals in the second half on Tuesday evening, defeating the Gray Wolves 3-0 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Lourdes was outshot in the contest 17-12, with
Kerstyn Williams making seven saves. Indiana Tech spoiled Homecoming for Lourdes on Saturday, rallying for a 3-2 victory in double-overtime.Â
Tara Blundell and
Karlie O'Keefe put the Gray Wolves in front 2-0, but the Warriors tied the match with 10:19 to play in regulation and won it on a penalty kick with 3:33 left in the second extra session.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders snapped a three-match losing streak on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Cornerstone at home. Nicolette Vultaggio leads Madonna with 12 goals and 27 total points this season while Julia Henning has found the back of the net four times. Emma Camp has distributed a team-leading five assists. In goal, Julia Stewart has played every minute for the Crusaders, and sports a 1.08 goals against average and a .788 save percentage.
A Rare Saturday Off: Lourdes will have an entire week off following the match at Madonna on Wednesday. Every team now has a bye date in their schedule following the announcement by Marygrove that the school was dropping their program late this summer. The Gray Wolves had been slated to play at Marygrove on Saturday.
Overtime Unkind to Lourdes: Lourdes played its eighth overtime match in program history on Saturday against Indiana Tech, and the Gray Wolves are still looking for their first victory in the extra session. Lourdes is 0-5-3 now when playing beyond 90 minutes, having played Saint Xavier to a 0-0 draw earlier this season. The Gray Wolves played three overtime contests in each of their first two seasons, and are on pace to reach that number again in 2017.
Koontz Sets Single Season Assist Mark: Tori Koontz handed out assists on both Lourdes goals against Indiana Tech on Saturday. The senior now has been credited with five helpers on the year, setting a new school single season mark. She broke the record of four previously set by teammate
Clare Ciarlino in 2016, a mark Ciarlino has also matched this season. Koontz and Ciarlino share the school's career assist record with eight entering play this week.
Blundell and O'Keefe Move Up Scoring Leaderboard: Tara Blundell and
Karlie O'Keefe both found the back of the net on Saturday against Indiana Tech for each of their third goals of the season. The pair are now tied with
Clare Ciarlino for second on the team's scoring list this season, trailing just
Remy Houttekier's five tallies. Blundell has taken just 10 shots total this year, with three of them finding the back of the net.
Williams Adds to Save Totals: Kerstyn Williams has had a solid rookie season between the posts for the Gray Wolves this year. The freshman made seven saves against both Aquinas and Indiana Tech last week, and now has made a total of 47 stops on the year, third most on the single season charts in program history. Williams has a 1.34 goals against average on the year along with an .839 save percentage.
Program's Best Start: Lourdes' 5-4-1 start is the best in program history through 10 matches. The previous best was in 2015, when the Gray Wolves started the year 4-5-1, before winning their fifth contest in match 11 against Indiana Tech.
Rammal and Swanson Lead All-Time Matches Played: Helena Rammal and
Alyssa Swanson currently rank first and second all-time at Lourdes in matches played. Both have appeared in nine of the 10 contests this year, with Rammal having played in 41 total matches during her three years with the Gray Wolves while Swanson has entered the field 39 times.
Captains Named: Remy Houttekier,
Tara Blundell, and
Kiley Transit will serve as the team's captains during the 2017 season. Houttekier is in her third season serving in the leadership role while Blundell is a team captain for the second time. Transit is a first time team captain.
This and That: Clare Ciarlino holds the school record for career goals (9) and points (26) ... 18 different players have started at least one match this season ... Lourdes is outscoring its opponents 11-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
