Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: The penultimate week of the regular season has arrived for Lourdes University, and with it a pair of key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matches which will go a long way to determining seeding in the upcoming league tournament. The Gray Wolves host 18th-ranked Cornerstone on Wednesday evening before heading to Aquinas on Saturday afternoon.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his eighth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 163-102 (.615) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his ninth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 183-137 (.572) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Cornerstone have split 12 previous matches 6-6 in a series that dates back to Oct. 8, 2011. The Golden Eagles won the previous meeting this season in Grand Rapids, Mich. in straight sets on Sept. 20 after Lourdes had won five of the previous six meetings in the series. The Gray Wolves are 2-0 all-time against Cornerstone inside of the Ebeid Rec Center, winning both meetings last year 3-0 and 3-1. Lourdes and Aquinas first met on Oct. 7, 2011, and have split 10 previous matches 5-5. The Gray Wolves won the earlier meeting this season in four sets on Sept. 27 at the Ebeid Rec Center, their fifth straight victory in the series. Lourdes holds a 2-1 series edge in games played inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center in Grand Rapids.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Tylar Roberson and
Genessee Tate each had 10 kills on Wednesday as Lourdes swept Concordia (Mich.) on the road 25-15, 25-15, 25-23. Tate and
Cierra Martinez each tallied 10 kills, with Martinez hitting .643, on Friday in a 25-18, 25-16, 25-14 win at Michigan-Dearborn. Roberson and Arnold had 11 kills each on Saturday afternoon, but the Gray Wolves suffered a 25-18, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 setback to 16th-ranked Madonna on the road Saturday afternoon.
Scouting Cornerstone: The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles have won nine straight matches after defeating Lawrence Tech on the road in four sets on Saturday afternoon. Kendra Zwart leads Cornerstone with 387 kills and is hitting .357 on the year. Hope Leppink has handed out 1,170 assists while Maria Ma has a team-high 34 service aces. Defensively, Mackenzie Vallad has tallied 489 digs while Zwart has a team-leading 137 blocks.
Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter the week having dropped two straight matches after suffering a 21-25, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-6 setback at Lawrence Tech on Friday evening. Kristin Danielson leads Aquinas with 268 kills and 32 service aces on the season while Kylie Christensen is hitting .288. Stephanie Chenlo has handed out 808 assists on the year. Defensively, Marisa Spetoskey has tallied 540 digs this season while Christensen has registered a team-leading 67 blocks.
Nearing the 20-Win Plateau: Lourdes enters the week just two victories shy of 20 for the season. The Gray Wolves have won at least 20 matches four times in their first seven seasons, including three of the last four years.
Dippold Moves Into Second All-Time in Digs: With 51 digs in the three matches last week,
Angelica Dippold has moved into second place on Lourdes' career digs list with 871, passing
Molly Shonk (2016-2017). The sophomore is just 129 digs shy of 1,000 for her career, but trails the school record holder, Michi Jimenez (2012-2015) by 1,272 digs for the top spot. Jimenez ended her four-year career with 2,143 career digs.
Tate Moves Into the Top-10: Genessee Tate has moved into the top-10 all-time at Lourdes with 410 career kills. The senior also ranks eighth all-time in attack percentage at .225 and is sixth with 103 career blocks.
Arnold Sets School Blocks Record: Emily Arnold has set the school's single season blocks record with 114 already in 2017, surpassing
Ave Stout's 2016 mark of 106. Arnold had previously set a school single-match record for blocks with nine rejections against Siena Heights back on Oct. 11. In one season, she already ranks fifth on the Gray Wolves' career blocks list.
Among the Nation's Leaders: Emily Arnold is eighth among all NAIA players averaging 1.27 blocks per set and is also 11th with 114 total blocks on the year.Â
Angelica Dippold ranks 21st nationally tallying 5.53 digs per set. As a team, Lourdes is 20th in the country averaging 18.34 digs per set and 38th registering 2.09 blocks per set. In addition, the Gray Wolves are 50th nationally handing out 11.71 assists per set.
Home Sweet Home: Lourdes had its 30-match home court win streak snapped on Sept. 23 against Saint Xavier, a string that dated back to the end of the 2013 season. The loss to the Cougars was also the first ever inside of the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. The Gray Wolves have won three straight at home since then though, and are now 17-1 all-time inside the facility.
This and That: Emily Arnold is the only Gray Wolf to appear in all 90 sets this season ...
Tylar Roberson had a pair of double-doubles last week, giving the freshman six on the season ... Lourdes has assured itself a home match for the WHAC tournament, and will host either a first round contest on Nov. 4 or a quarterfinal match on Nov. 8.
