Lourdes (8-7-2, 4-5-1 WHAC)
WHAC Tournament - Quarterfinals
Match #18: Wednesday, November 1, 2 p.m. EDT
at Madonna (12-3-2, 7-2-1 WHAC)
Madonna Soccer & Lacrosse Field - Livonia, Mich.
Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Postseason play begins on Wednesday afternoon for Lourdes University, as the Gray Wolves travel to Madonna for the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament. The seventh-seeded Gray Wolves are in the tournament for the second time in program history while the second-seeded Crusaders are hosting a postseason match for the first time since 2014.
Head Coach Jackie Donovan: In her third season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Donovan has a 19-28-4 (.412) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Madonna leads the all-time series against Lourdes 3-0 dating back to Sept. 30, 2015. Earlier this season, on Oct. 4, the Crusaders scored a 5-0 victory over the Gray Wolves in Livonia, Mich. in the only previous meeting on Madonna's home field. This will be the first meeting ever between the two schools in postseason play.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Clare Ciarlino scored twice and
Remy Houttekier had the match-winner just 1:17 into the contest on Wednesday afternoon as Lourdes defeated Michigan-Dearborn 5-0 at Wildcat Stadium.Â
Tara Blundell and
Courtney Knoerl each added goals as well in the victory. On Saturday, Lourdes celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 victory over Concordia (Mich.) to clinch a berth in the WHAC tournament. Ciarlino scored the lone goal of the match while
Kerstyn Williams recorded 10 saves in her first collegiate shutout.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter the WHAC tournament unbeaten in their last eight matches (7-0-1) following a 1-1 draw at Indiana Tech last Wednesday in their regular season finale. Nicolette Vultaggio leads Madonna with 22 goals and six assists on the season, tallying 50 total points. Julia Henning has added six goals while Emma Camp has a team-leading eight assists. In goal, Julia Stewart has played all 1,570 minutes this year, and sports a 0.80 goals against average and an .833 save percentage.
Lourdes in the WHAC Tournament: The Gray Wolves are making their second WHAC tournament appearance in program history. In 2015, the program's inaugural season, Lourdes qualified as the seventh seed, and fell on the road at Siena Heights 6-0. Â
Next in the WHAC Tourney: The winner of the Lourdes-Madonna match will advance to Saturday's semifinal against the Siena Heights-Indiana Tech victor. The entire tournament is played at the site of the higher seed, thus Lourdes could only host a championship match if it were to face eighth-seeded Lawrence Tech.
WHAC Honors: Clare Ciarlino and
Kerstyn Williams were named the WHAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively after helping Lourdes to wins over Michigan-Dearborn and Concordia (Mich.). Ciarlino scored twice against the Wolverines before adding the match-winner against the Cardinals to become the first Offensive Player of the Week in Gray Wolf history. Williams made two saves against Michigan-Dearborn in 45 minutes of action before earning her first collegiate shutout, making 10 stops, in the victory over Concordia to become the first Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 28, 2015 (Erika Brinkman).
Best Season in Program History: Lourdes has assured itself of its first .500 season in program history this season following the victory over Concordia (Mich.). The Gray Wolves have also matched the school record of eight wins, which was originally accomplished by the program's inaugural team in 2015.
A Quick Strike: When
Remy Houttekier scored just 1:17 into the match against Michigan-Dearborn on Wednesday afternoon, it marked the fastest goal in program history. The previous fasted came earlier this season against Bethel (Ind.) on Sept. 16 when
Clare Ciarlino scored 2:50 into the contest with the Pilots. Houttekier's goal also marked the third time this season that Lourdes scored within the first six minutes of the match.
Among the National Leaders: As a team, Lourdes ranks 35th among all NAIA programs having made 120 saves this season. The Gray Wolves' 7.06 saves per match rank 41st nationally.
Single Season Record: Lourdes tied or broken numerous program records this season as a team. The Gray Wolves' 29 goals surpass last year's squad of 24 for a new school mark. Lourdes has also handed out 24 assists, double the previous mark set in 2016, while the team's 82 points also break last year's mark. In addition, the 225 shots taken are a new school record, along with 120 saves defensively. The six shutouts match a school mark set in 2015, and the Gray Wolves will set a new mark for matches in a season when they step onto the field Wednesday at Madonna.
Captains: Remy Houttekier,
Tara Blundell, and
Kiley Transit will serve as the team's captains during the 2017 season. Houttekier is in her third season serving in the leadership role while Blundell is a team captain for the second time. Transit is a first time team captain.
This and That: Courtney Knoerl's goal against Michigan-Dearborn was the first of her collegiate career ...
Helena Rammal's assist on Knoerl's goal marked the junior's first point since her freshman season ... the win against Concordia (Mich.) was the first for the Gray Wolves this season when being outshot by their opponents.
