Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: After nine straight non-conference matches to open the season, Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play begins this week for Lourdes University. The Gray Wolves travel to Siena Heights on Wednesday for the league opener before stepping out of conference play on Saturday for a match at Bethel (Ind.).
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his eighth season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 151-97 (.609) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his ninth season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 171-132 (.564) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Lourdes holds a 10-6 series advantage against Siena Heights dating back to Sept. 10, 2010. The Gray Wolves have won four straight matches between the two schools. Lourdes has swept the last three contests, including both matches played in 2016. Siena Heights holds a 4-3 series edge in matches played in Adrian, Mich. Lourdes holds a 4-3 series advantage against Bethel (Ind.) dating back to Aug. 27, 2010. The Gray Wolves have won the last four meetings, including a 3-0 sweep of the Pilots on Oct. 1, 2016 in the Ebeid Rec Center. Lourdes is 2-0 all-time in matches played in Mishawaka, Ind.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the home portion of the 2017 season on Wednesday, sweeping Indiana-South Bend behind a double-double from
Kristin Murrell. Friday and Saturday the Gray Wolves participated in the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational. The Gray Wolves fell in five sets to Saint Francis (Ill.) on Friday morning despite 15 kills and a .480 hitting percentage from
Genessee Tate.Â
Angelica Dippold had a school-record 39 digs against Indiana-Kokomo on Friday afternoon in a four-set victory over the Cougars. Saturday began with a sweep of Taylor as
Chelsea Lawrence hit .550 with 12 kills. The Gray Wolves closed the tournament Saturday afternoon, falling in straight sets to #21 Indiana Wesleyan, with Dippold recording 13 digs.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints have won five straight matches entering WHAC play after sweeping all four contests at their own tournament last weekend. Paige Hudgin leads Siena Heights with 96 kills (2.91/set) this season while hitting .230 offensively. Amanda Metz has handed out 565 assists (9.19/set) while Christine Tylutki has registered 11 service aces (0.33/set). Gabby Kalugar is the team leader with 182 digs (5.52/set) and Elizabeth Breton leads the Saints with 23 blocks (0.77/set) on the year.
Scouting Bethel (Ind.): The Pilots snapped a three-match losing skid on Saturday afternoon, defeating Indiana-Northwest in straight sets. Bethel will host Spring Arbor on Wednesday and travel to Goshen on Friday before entertaining the Gray Wolves. Haley Brown leads the Pilot offense with 82 kills (1.82/set) while Payton Anderson has a team-high 168 assists (3.73/set). Erin Carlos has recorded 19 service aces (0.41/set) and a team-leading 212 digs (4.61/set). Kathryn Novy and Kassandra Williams each have blocked 25 balls this year (0.71 and 0.57/set respectively).
Lourdes in WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 3-3 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers. After dropping the first three conference openers in program history, all to Madonna, the Gray Wolves have won their first league match in three straight seasons. Last year the Gray Wolves opened conference play with a sweep of Siena Heights at home.
All-Time in WHAC Play: In the Gray Wolves' six seasons as members of the WHAC, Lourdes has posted a 60-31 (.659) conference record. The Gray Wolves have won back-to-back WHAC regular season and conference tournament titles, and are 37-1 in conference play over the last two years.
A Record-Breaking Effort: Angelica Dippold set a new Lourdes single match digs record on Friday against Indiana-Kokomo. The Gray Wolf libero registered 39 digs against the Cougars, breaking the previous mark of 37 set by Jordan Kerr at Concordia (Mich.) on Oct. 28, 2011.
Conference Honors: Angelica Dippold was named the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career after her effort last week. The sophomore averaged 5.83 digs per set after tallying 105 total in the five matches. She also handed out 21 assists on the week.
Dividing Setting Duties: Lourdes has used three setters throughout the first part of the season, with all three having appeared in at least 19 of the team's 32 sets played to date.Â
Jami Markus leads the team in total assists with 124, but
Sarah Wisser has the highest assist average (5.33/set on 112 total helpers).Â
Evynn Eubanks is nearly 100 total assist mark, entering the week with 91 as a freshman.
Home Sweet Home: Lourdes has yet to drop a match inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. The Gray Wolves posted a perfect 11-0 record in home matches last season and won their opener this year. In fact, the Gray Wolves have lost just one set total at home in the building. Overall, Lourdes has won 28 consecutive home contests, last falling on its home floor against Northwestern Ohio in five sets on Nov. 1, 2014 at Tam-o-Shanter.
This and That: The win against Indiana-Kokomo was the 150th in program history ... Saturday's match at Bethel (Ind.) will be the 250th overall in school history ...
