Lourdes (1-2, 0-0 WHAC)
Match #4: Saturday, September 9, 4 p.m. EDT
vs. Saint Xavier (0-3-1, 0-0 CCAC)
Wildcat Stadium - Sylvania, Ohio
Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After picking up a victory for the first time this season last weekend, Lourdes returns home to begin a four-match homestand on Saturday afternoon. The Gray Wolves will entertain Saint Xavier at Wildcat Stadium to begin their final stretch of non-conference tilts.
Head Coach Jackie Donovan: In her third season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Donovan has an 12-23-2 (.351) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Saint Xavier will be meeting on the pitch for the first time on Saturday. Â
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes scored first on a
Clare Ciarlino goal at Trinity International on Friday afternoon, but the Gray Wolves were unable to hold on and fell 2-1. The Trojans tied the match less than three minutes later and took the lead for good on a penalty kick with 15 minutes to play.Â
Kerstyn Williams made 13 saves for the Gray Wolves in goal. Lourdes picked up its first victory of the season less than 24 hours later, defeating Judson 2-0 on Saturday.Â
Remy Houttekier scored the match-winner before Ciarlino added an insurance tally. Williams made six stops for the Gray Wolves over the first 58 minutes while
Kiley Transit added three more saves in relief.
Scouting Saint Xavier: The Cougars are still looking for their first victory of the season and have dropped two straight contests following a 2-2 draw with Bethel (Ind.) on Aug. 30. Last weekend Saint Xavier fell 3-1 to Cornerstone and 2-1 against Aquinas. Andreina Hernandez leads Saint Xavier with two goals and four points while Hannah Bressner and Alyssa Gilman have each found the back of the net as well. Carly Bledsoe and Ashley Smialek have each played two matches in goal, surrendering two goal each. Bledsoe sports an .833 save percentage while Smialek has posted a .788 save rate.
Battling the CCAC: Lourdes will face its third straight team from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday when the Gray Wolves take on Saint Xavier. Both Trinity International and Judson are members of the CCAC as well. Prior to this season, Lourdes had only played one previous CCAC foe, falling 2-1 in double-overtime at Saint Francis (Ind.) in the program's second match ever back in 2015.
A Record-Setting Homestand: Beginning Saturday against Saint Xavier, Lourdes will return home to Wildcat Stadium for four straight matches, marking the longest homestand in program history. The Gray Wolves have never played more than two back-to-back home contests throughout the first two seasons, although Lourdes was slated to play three in a row in 2015. One of those three matches to close the regular season became a forfeit against Marygrove though.
Ciarlino Sets Scoring Mark:
Clare Ciarlino scored against both Trinity International and Judson last weekend for her first two tallies of 2017. In the process, the sophomore matched
Jada Foster (2015-2016) for most career goals in school history with eight. In addition, Ciarlino added an assist against Judson to give her five points on the year, and became the school's career points leader over with 21, passing Foster's previous high of 17.
Houttekier Tallies Match-Winner: Remy Houttekier scored the match-winning goal against Judson, her third career tally and first since 2015 after sitting out last season as a redshirt. The fifth-year senior became just the second Gray Wolf in program history to record more than one match-winner in program history, having also scored one against Lawrence Tech on Oct. 21, 2015. Â
Fleming Earns First Collegiate Point: Maddy Fleming registered an assist on
Remy Houttekier's match-winning goal on Saturday against Judson, and in the process earned her first collegiate point. The freshman came off of the bench in both matches last weekend after starting in her collegiate debut against Taylor.
Williams Has Solid Start in Goal: Kerstyn Williams has a strong showing in her first three matches as a collegian. The freshman has yielded just two goals in more than 160 minutes, posting a 1.12 goals against average. She has also saved 20 shots, giving her a .909 save percentage.
Looking for More Scoring Opportunities: Lourdes has been outshot 65-17 through three matches this season. Nearly 65% of the Gray Wolves' shots have been on goal though, as Lourdes has been outshot just 37-11 in that category.Â
Clare Ciarlino has tallied a team-high five shots this year, three of which have been on frame.
Lots of Different Lineups: Of the 18 Gray Wolves who have seen the field this season, 15 of them have made at least one start this year. Â
Captains Named: Remy Houttekier,
Tara Blundell, and
Kiley Transit will serve as the team's captains during the 2017 season. Houttekier is in her third season serving in the leadership role while Blundell is a team captain for the second time. Transit is a first time team captain.
This and That: Lourdes is 7-9-1 all-time at Wildcat Stadium after dropping the opener this year to Taylor ... the Gray Wolves have never won an overtime match in program history (0-4-2) ... the win over Judson snapped Lourdes' losing streak at seven matches, the longest in school history, which had dated back to Oct. 12, 2016.
