Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes will close out its season-opening four-match road trip this week with two more non-league contests. The Gray Wolves head to Bethel (Ind.) on Wednesday afternoon before traveling to Taylor for a Saturday matinee.
Head Coach Jackie (Donovan) Phillips: In her fourth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Phillips has a 21-29-4 (.426) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Bethel (Ind.) have split their two previous meetings in a series that dates back to Sept. 7, 2016. The Pilots won the initial meeting in Mishawaka, Ind. 3-2 before the Gray Wolves scored a 2-0 victory in 2017 at Wildcat Stadium. Taylor is 3-0 all-time against Lourdes dating back to Sept. 19, 2015. The Trojans have posted three clean sheets against the Gray Wolves, including a 6-0 victory at Wildcat Stadium in 2017. In Lourdes only previous appearance in Upland, Ind., Taylor scored a 2-0 victory in 2016.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened the season on Thursday evening with a 4-0 victory at La Roche.
Karlie O'Keefe scored twice while
Morghan Russell and
Erin Caldwell each added goals in the win.
Kerstyn Williams made six saves in goal for the clean sheet. On Friday, O'Keefe netted the match-winning goal with five seconds remaining in regulation to give Lourdes a 1-0 win at Point Park.
Kiley Transit made seven stops for the shutout.
Scouting Bethel (Ind.): The Pilots are unbeaten in their first three matches after playing Saint Xavier to a 2-2 draw last Wednesday. Meghan Knoff and Jalyn Cirino have each scored twice for Bethel while Lizzie Hart has a goal and an assist. Tessa Zimmerly has played a majority of the minutes in goal, posting a .670 goals against average and an .800 save percentage.
Scouting Taylor: The Trojans remained unbeaten with just one draw to go along with two victories after defeating Olivet Nazarene 5-1 last Wednesday at home. Taylor heads to NCAA Division I IUPUI on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes. Erin Teevans has scored five times and added two assists for 12 points on the young season while Bailey Zehr has two goals and five helpers for nine points. Megan Williams and Lauren Engelkes have split time in goal, with Williams leading the way with a .923 save percentage and a 0.58 goals against mark. Engelkes has a 0.67 GAA and an .833 save mark.
Best Start in Program History: Lourdes has matched the best start in program history with its 2-0 mark, also accomplished by the 2016 team. No Gray Wolf women's soccer team has started a season better than 2-1 through three matches.
That's a Winner (and Another): Karlie O'Keefe entered the 2018 season with one career match-winning goal. The junior tallied two in as many nights last week, scoring the first tally of the game against La Roche before adding the victor with five seconds remaining in regulation at Point Park. O'Keefe now is tied with
Clare Ciarlino (2016-2017) for third all-time with three match-winners, one behind the school-record of four set by
Jada Foster (2015-2016) and
Remy Houttekier (2015, 2017).
Moving Up the Record Book: Karlie O'Keefe's three goals in the opening weekend now give her nine career goals, and tie her for second with
Remy Houttekier (2015, 2017) on the school's career list. She is four goals behind the all-time record-holder,
Clare Ciarlino, who scored 13 goals in 2016 and 2017. O'Keefe's 18 total points have moved her into third all-time at Lourdes.
Making an Immediate Difference: Morghan Russell and
Erin Caldwell made instant impacts to the Gray Wolf lineup, as both scored less than 19 minutes into their first collegiate contest. Another freshman,
Cassie Stitt, assisted on the first goal of the season, which proved to be the match-winner, against La Roche.
Quite a Start in Goal: Lourdes has a pair of talented goalkeepers, each of whom recorded their second career shutout last week.
Kerstyn Williams made six saves against La Roche, and lowered her career goals against average to 1.45 while
Kiley Transit made seven stops against Point Park, improving her career GAA mark to 2.40.
Life on the Road: Lourdes opens its season with four (would have been five without the cancellation) consecutive non-conference matches away from Wildcat Stadium, marking the longest road trip in program history. The Gray Wolves longest previous road trip was three straight matches, something that has occurred three times. Lourdes will not play at home this season until a visit from Huntington on Sept. 11.
Captains Selected: Lourdes has announced tri-captains for the 2018 season.
Kiley Transit will serve as a captain for the second consecutive season while
Reagan Boice and
Delaney Gravlin will serve in a leadership role for the first time with the Gray Wolves.
This and That: Lourdes is 8-18-1 all-time in road matches ... the back-to-back shutouts mark the fifth time in program history the Gray Wolves have had two consecutive clean sheets ... Lourdes is outshooting its opponents 29-19 thus far this season ... 10 Gray Wolves made their Lourdes debut against La Roche.
