Women's Soccer Travels to Cornerstone Saturday

Complete PDF Notes
Lourdes (8-4, 4-2 WHAC)
Match #13: Saturday, October 19, 4:30 p.m. EDT
at Cornerstone (9-4, 3-3 WHAC)
Soccer Stadium - Grand Rapids, Mich.

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: With five matches remaining in the regular season, Lourdes returns to the road on Saturday afternoon for a key Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match as the Gray Wolves travel to Cornerstone.  Both teams are battling for positioning in the tightly bunched WHAC standings.

Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her fifth season on the Lourdes bench, Jackie Phillips has a 31-44-6 (.420) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach.  She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Cornerstone has won all four previous meetings against the Gray Wolves in a series that began Oct. 7, 2015.  Last year, Lourdes found the back of the net for the first time ever against the Golden Eagles, falling 3-2 at Wildcat Stadium.  The two sides have not met in Grand Rapids, Mich., where Cornerstone holds a 2-0 series edge, since 2016.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes posted its fourth consecutive victory last Wednesday (Oct. 9) with a 2-1 triumph over Cleary on the road.  Jayla Musselman started the scoring in the 21st minute while Abigail Mann added a key insurance goal in the 51st minute.  Kerstyn Williams made five saves in goal for the victory for the Gray Wolves.  Aquinas snapped the Gray Wolves' winning streak on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium with a 4-0 victory over Lourdes.  The Saints scored twice in each half to earn the victory.  Williams made nine saves in net for the Gray Wolves.

Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles had their two-match winning streak stopped last Saturday, as Cornerstone fell 2-0 at third-ranked Northwestern Ohio.  Alexys Riksen leads the Golden Eagles with eight goals and 17 total points while Jozlyn Vantol has 16 points on five goals and a team-high six assists.  Anna Morgan has added five goals and five assists this season for 15 points.  In goal, Mikayla Johnson has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 1.30 goals against average and a .769 save percentage.

A Tight WHAC Race: With five matches remaining in the regular season, every match is important as teams jockey for positioning heading into the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.  The Gray Wolves currently sit in a tie for fifth and sixth place, just three points (one win) out of second, but just three points ahead of eighth place as well.  Lourdes' remaining schedule has the Gray Wolves facing teams in the top eight positions in the ledger in all five matches.

Matching the Wins Record: With eight victories already this season, Lourdes has tied the school record for wins in a season.  The 2015 and 2017 teams both posted eight wins as well, with only the 2017 team finishing the year .500 overall (8-8-2).  The Gray Wolves need one win to set the new win mark as well as assure themselves a second .500 season.

First Collegiate Goal: Jayla Musselman found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career last Wednesday at Cleary.  Her corner kick curled off a defender into the back of the net for her first collegiate points.

Mann Moving Up Single Season Charts: Abigail Mann scored her fifth goal of the season for the Gray Wolves at Cleary, giving her the team lead this season.  Her five goals rank sixth on the school's single season charts, just one behind Clare Ciarlino (2016) and Karlie O'Keefe (2018) for fourth.  In addition, her six assists are tied with Tori Koontz (2017) for the Gray Wolves' single season record.  Mann's 16 total points are tied with Ciarlino's 2016 total for third on the single season charts.  She is two points shy of Ciarlino's 2017 total for second all-time and three points shy of Remy Houttekier's 2017 total of 19 points.

Who's in Today's Lineup?: Lourdes has suffered the injury bug throughout the season.  The Gray Wolves have only had five players start all 12 matches thus far this year.  Abigail Mann, Katie Varney, Karlie O'Keefe, Erin Caldwell, and Elaina Hillman have been the mainstays in the starting 11 throughout the season.  In addition, Maddy Hodgson, Morgan Henkle, and Erika Turk are the only other three players to step onto the pitch in every match.

A Record-Setting Shutout: With the clean sheet against Rochester (Mich.) on Oct. 5, Kerstyn Williams tied the Gray Wolves' shutout record with the sixth of her career, matching Erika Brinkman's (2015) career total at Lourdes.  Her four shutouts this year are tied for second with Kiley Transit (2018) on the school's single season chart as well, behind Brinkman's six clean sheets from 2015.

Looking for Another Career Mark: Karlie O'Keefe already holds the school's career goals record with 14 during her four seasons with the Gray Wolves.  The senior has 31 career points, and is just three points shy of Clare Ciarlino's (2016-2017) career points record of 34.

Experience in the Lineup: Karlie O'Keefe is the school's career record holder having made 63 career starts, 23 more than any other player in program history.  Her 63 all-time matches are also the most appearances of any Gray Wolf all-time at Lourdes.  In addition, Lauren Poslaiko has moved into fourth all-time, having stepped onto the field 47 times in her four years.  Junior Maria Schmidt is second all-time in career starts, registering her 40th last Saturday against Aquinas.

Success on the Road: With two regular season road matches remaining on the schedule, the Gray Wolves are 3-2 this year away from home.  Lourdes has never finished a year .500 or better on the road, with its best road finish coming in its inaugural season of 2015 when the Gray Wolves posted a 4-5-1 mark.

This and That: The four-match winning streak that was snapped against Aquinas matched a school record for longest in program history ... 13 different Gray Wolves have registered at least one point this season with 11 players scoring at least one goal ... the team's 25 goals this season is second most in program history, trailing just the 2017 squad's 29 tallies.
