Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes wraps up a brief two-match homestand to open the season on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves begin Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play hosting Cornerstone. Â The Gray Wolves are in search of their first victory in the 2020 season.
Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her sixth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Phillips has a 31-51-6 (.386) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. Â She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Cornerstone is 5-0 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began Oct. 7, 2015. Â The Golden Eagles downed the Gray Wolves 1-0 in Grand Rapids, Mich. last season. Â Cornerstone is 2-0 against Lourdes all-time at Wildcat Stadium, with their last appearance in Sylvania coming in 2018, a 3-2 Golden Eagle win.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Ohio Christian's Emmie Brenley scored on a cross in the box less than 10 minutes into the contest on Sept. 23 for the lone goal of the match in a 1-0 Trailblazers victory at Wildcat Stadium. Â
Lily Yoder made two saves in goal for the Gray Wolves while Lourdes outshot Ohio Christian 20-6 in the contest, including 9-3 on goal.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles will be playing the 2020 season opener on Saturday against Lourdes after finishing 2019 with a 14-5 record overall and an 8-3 mark in the WHAC, tying for third place. Â This season Cornerstone is tabbed fifth in the WHAC's preseason poll. Â Jozlyn VanTol is Cornerstone's top returning scorer, having tallied six goals and a team high seven assists for 19 total points one year ago. Â In goal, Mikayla Johnson returns for her senior season after notching a 1.15 goals against average and a .802 save percentage.
Lourdes in WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 2-3 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers. Â The Gray Wolves have dropped two straight league openers after falling on the road at Northwestern Ohio 6-1 last season. Â The Gray Wolves last won a conference opener in 2017, a 4-1 victory on the road at Rochester (Mich.). Â Lourdes has only opened WHAC play at home once prior, a 3-2 setback to Davenport in 2016.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Eighth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish eighth in the WHAC this season according to the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Â The Gray Wolves placed eighth in 2019 as well. Â In the poll, Lourdes was picked to finish just ahead of Cleary and just behind Concordia (Mich.).
Getting Off Lots of Shots: Despite not finding the back of the net in the season opener, Lourdes outshot Ohio Christian 20-6 and the Gray Wolves had nine shots on goal. Â Ten different players registered at least one attempt on the afternoon, with
Maddy Hodgson,
Elaina Hillman,
Cassie Stitt, and
Katie Varney leading the way with three shots each.
Yoder Makes Debut in Net: Lily Yoder made her collegiate debut in goal for the Gray Wolves. Â After yielding the early goal, Yoder made a pair of saves in the second half while playing all 90 minutes in the season opener.
Gray Wolf Debuts: In addition to
Lily Yoder making her collegiate debut against Ohio Christian, five other Lourdes players saw their first collegiate action against the Trailblazers. Â
Alexis Gordon drew a starting assignment while
Chloe Nofziger,
Gianna Salatino,
McKenzie Klingensmith, and
Simona Iacobacci all came off the bench for the Gray Wolves.
In the Record Book: In just one season,
Abigail Mann has moved into fifth place all-time at Lourdes with six career goals. Â She also ranks fourth on the career list with six assists and 18 total points. Â
Erin Caldwell and
Katie Varney are tied for sixth with five career goals while Varney also ranks sixth with four assists. Â Varney is sixth with 14 career points while Caldwell is eighth on the points list with 12.
Lots of Appearances: Maria Schmidt ranks second all-time at Lourdes with 46 starts wearing the terra cotta and black. Â She trails just
Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019) who started 68 contests during her time with the Gray Wolves. Â Schmidt also ranks fifth in all-time appearances with 47, six behind
Lauren Poslaiko (2016-2019) who is fourth having played in 53 contests. Â
Erin Caldwell is eighth all-time with 32 starts in her career, two shy of the sixth place tie between Tori Koontz (2016-2017) and Lana Bell (2016-2018), both of whom started 34 contests. Â
Captains: Kerstyn Williams,
Maddy Hodgson, and
Olivia Pomponio will serve as the team's tri-captains in 2020. Â All three are in their first season in the leadership role.
A Different Look This Season: Due to COVID-19, five schools in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference have opted to not play soccer this fall, moving all of their matches to the spring. Â The remaining seven league schools will play a split season, competing in five WHAC matches in the fall and six in the spring. Â The WHAC tournament and NAIA National Championships will also take place in the spring.
