Women's Soccer Takes to the Road for the First Time in 2020 on Saturday

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes takes to the road for the first time in 2020 on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves head north of the state border to face Siena Heights.  The Gray Wolves are in search of its first victory of the season.

Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her sixth season on the Lourdes bench, Jackie Phillips has a 31-52-6 (.382) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach.  She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Siena Heights is 5-0-1 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began Oct. 31, 2015.  The Saints posted a 1-0 double-overtime victory on Nov. 1, 2019 in last year's season finale between the two schools.  The lone draw came in 2017, a 2-2 tie at Wildcat Stadium.  All-time, Siena Heights is 2-0 against the Gray Wolves in Adrian, Mich., a place the two sides have not faced one another since 2016.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Cornerstone's Sierah Adams scored after picking up a loose ball outside the box with just over five minutes remaining in the contest last Saturday for the lone goal of the match in a 1-0 Golden Eagles victory at Wildcat Stadium.  Kerstyn Williams made six saves in goal for the Gray Wolves while Lourdes outshot Cornerstone 16-10 in the contest.

Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints opened their 2020 season last Saturday with a 1-0 victory at home against Indiana Tech.  Marissa  Young scored the lone goal of the match for Siena Heights while Jennifer Richmond drew the assist.  In goal, Kara Bishop made three saves to earn the shutout in a match in which Siena Heights outshot the Warriors 21-10.  The Saints were picked to finish fourth in the WHAC this season according to the coaches' preseason poll.

Lourdes in Road Openers: Lourdes is 2-2-1 all-time in its first road game of the season.  The Gray Wolves have won two straight road openers after defeating Huntington 1-0 in Huntington, Ind. last season.  The Gray Wolves also won their road opener in 2018, a 4-0 triumph at La Roche.

Looking for the Back of the Net: Lourdes has been shutout in back-to-back matches to open the season for the first time in program history.  The Gray Wolves have had numerous chances this season, holding a 36-16 shot advantage in two matches, including a 16-10 edge on goal.  Lourdes has been unable to find the back of the net though.  Maddy Hodgson leads the Gray Wolves with six shot attempts, while Chloe Shaffer has fired five shots, including a team-high three on goal.

Gray Wolves Tabbed Eighth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish eighth in the WHAC this season according to the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  The Gray Wolves placed eighth in 2019 as well.  In the poll, Lourdes was picked to finish just ahead of Cleary and just behind Concordia (Mich.).

Heilman Makes Lourdes Debut: Karlie Heilman made her collegiate debut for the Gray Wolves last Saturday against Cornerstone.  The freshman saw action for the first time with just under 20 minutes to play in the second half.

Williams Sees First Action in Goal: Kerstyn Williams saw her first action of the season against Cornerstone, stopping six of the seven shots she faced in goal.  The senior goalkeeper ranks second in program history in matches played in goal (37), minutes played in goal (2799:26), and saves (234).  She is tied for the school mark with six shutouts while her career save percentage of .796 and goals against average of 1.93 are program records.

In the Record Book: In just one season, Abigail Mann has moved into fifth place all-time at Lourdes with six career goals.  She also ranks fourth on the career list with six assists and 18 total points.  Erin Caldwell and Katie Varney are tied for sixth with five career goals while Varney also ranks sixth with four assists.  Varney is sixth with 14 career points while Caldwell is eighth on the points list with 12.

Lots of Appearances: Maria Schmidt ranks second all-time at Lourdes with 47 starts wearing the terra cotta and black.  She trails just Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019) who started 68 contests during her time with the Gray Wolves.  Schmidt also ranks fifth in all-time appearances with 48, five behind Lauren Poslaiko (2016-2019) who is fourth having played in 53 contests.  Erin Caldwell is eighth all-time with 33 starts in her career, one shy of the sixth place tie between Tori Koontz (2016-2017) and Lana Bell (2016-2018), both of whom started 34 contests.  

Captains: Kerstyn Williams, Maddy Hodgson, and Olivia Pomponio will serve as the team's tri-captains in 2020.  All three are in their first season in the leadership role.

A Different Look This Season: Due to COVID-19, five schools in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference have opted to not play soccer this fall, moving all of their matches to the spring.  The remaining seven league schools will play a split season, competing in five WHAC matches in the fall and six in the spring.  The WHAC tournament and NAIA National Championships will also take place in the spring.

This and That: Lourdes has played 21 different players already this season ... the Gray Wolves are 2-8-6 all-time in overtime matches ... Lourdes is 11-28-3 all-time on the road ... the Gray Wolves are looking to snap an nine-match losing skid dating back to last season ... Lourdes has taken 17 corner kicks while yielding just seven so far this year.
