Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Two of the top four teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference meet in Lima, Ohio on Wednesday as Lourdes travels to the University of Northwestern Ohio. The Gray Wolves will then conclude the home portion of the 2021 regular season on Saturday, entertaining Lawrence Tech for their annual Cancer Match.
Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her seventh season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Phillips has a 43-63-11 (.415) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio holds a 7-0 all-time advantage against Lourdes dating back to Oct. 14, 2015. The Racers defeated the Gray Wolves 1-0 at Wildcat Stadium in their last meeting on March 3, 2021. UNOH is 4-0 against Lourdes in Lima, Ohio. Lawrence Tech is 4-2 against Lourdes in a series that began Oct. 21, 2015. The Blue Devils have won three straight matches between the two schools following a 3-1 win in Southfield, Mich. on Oct. 17, 2020. The series is tied 1-1 at Wildcat Stadium.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes took first place Madonna to overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium but the Crusaders notched the match-winner just 1:06 into the extra session for a 2-1 victory over the Gray Wolves.
Abigail Mann tied the match at one with Lourdes' lone goal late in the first half.
Emmy Rodger made six saves in net. On Saturday,
Brynn McGarvey scored twice and added an assist as the Gray Wolves defeated Rochester (Mich.) 4-0 on the road. Mann and
Chloe Shaffer both found the back of the net as well for Lourdes while Rodger and
Lily Yoder each made one save in goal.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers had their seven-match unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-0 at Aquinas. Ariana Mondiri leads Northwestern Ohio with nine goals and 20 points while season while Jeweleen Reuille, Nanna Rosengreen, and Renata Aguirre share the team lead with four assists. In goal, Martina Galloni has played a majority of the minutes, sporting a 1.23 goals against average and a .724 save percentage.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils enter the week following a scoreless draw at home against Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday. Lawrence Tech hosts Rochester (Mich.) on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. DiOnna Hill leads the Blue Devils with five goals and two assists for 12 total points while Paris Rettig also has a pair of helpers. In goal, Rebecca Almandoz has seen the most action, posting a .735 save percentage and a 2.30 goals against average.
Cancer Match: Lourdes is holding its annual Cancer Match on Saturday to raise funds for The Victory Center. The Gray Wolves are having a bake sale all week on campus and will also be raffling off a basket and accepting donations at the match against Lawrence Tech.
Mann Sets School Scoring Record: Abigail Mann set the Lourdes school record with her 15th career goal against Madonna, passing Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019) for the top spot all-time. She added her 16th career goal at Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday. Mann has also broken the school's career points mark, and now has a total of 41. Mann's handed out her ninth career assist against Rochester as well, tying Tori Koontz's (2016-2017) all-time school mark of nine.
WHAC Tournament Watch: With two weeks, and four regular season matches, remaining, Lourdes is closing in on securing a berth in the upcoming WHAC tournament. The Gray Wolves have never been seeded higher than seventh in the postseason event, but this year are battling for a top-four finish and the opportunity to host a quarterfinal contest.
Lots of Extra Soccer: Lourdes entered the 2021 season having played 16 overtime matches in the program's first six seasons but have already gone beyond regulation five times this year. The Gray Wolves should have played a sixth overtime contest as well, but the match against Huntington was called a draw after regulation due to thunderstorms.
Stingy Defense: Lourdes has yielded just 10 goals in 1,341 minutes of action this season, a goals against average of 0.67. The Gray Wolves have five shutouts to their credit on the season, one shy of the school's single season record. Lourdes is looking to break the 2018 team's goals against average for a season, finishing that year with a 1.52 GAA.
Multi-Goal Games: When
Brynn McGarvey scored twice and added an assist on Saturday at Rochester (Mich.), she became the first Gray Wolf this season to tally five points in a contest. In addition, she registered her second multi-goal effort of the season, the only Lourdes player this year to do so.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Ninth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in ninth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind eighth place Indiana Tech. Aquinas was chosen to win the league crown.
Captains: Kerstyn Williams, and
Olivia Pomponio are serving as the team's co-captains in 2021. Both served in the leadership role in 2020 as well.
