Gray Wolves Look to Continue Best WHAC Start in Program History

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes take to the road briefly this week as the Gray Wolves head to Cleary on Wednesday afternoon looking to extend their three-match unbeaten streak.  The Gray Wolves then return home on Saturday evening to welcome nationally-ranked Aquinas to Wildcat Stadium.

Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her seventh season on the Lourdes bench, Jackie Phillips has a 41-62-10 (.407) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach.  She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.

Series Notes: Lourdes leads the all-time series against Cleary 4-1 dating back to Sept. 23, 2015.  The Gray Wolves have won the last three meetings between the two schools, including a 2-1 victory in Howell, Mich. on Oct. 9, 2019 in the last contest against the Cougars.  The series is tied 1-1 in Howell.  Aquinas is 7-0 all-time against Lourdes in a series that began Oct. 28, 2015.  Last season the Saints posted a pair of 3-0 victories, both in Grand Rapids, Mich., including one in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals.  The Saints are 3-0 against Lourdes at Wildcat Stadium.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Chloe Shaffer's blast from distance in the 30th minute proved to be the lone goal of the match last Wednesday (Sept. 29) as Lourdes defeated Indiana Tech 1-0 at Wildcat Stadium.  Annah Zacerkowny drew the assist.  Emmy Rodger made five saves for the clean sheet in net.  On Saturday (Oct. 2), Lourdes celebrated Senior Night before battling Michigan-Dearborn to a 1-1 double-overtime draw.  The Gray Wolves tied the match on a Zacerkowny goal with McKenzie Klingensmith drawing the assist just 1:01 after the Wolverines took the lead.  Kerstyn Williams made five saves for Lourdes in goal.

Scouting Cleary: The Cougars are still looking for their first victory of the season after falling 5-0 at home against Siena Heights on Saturday (Oct. 2).  Cleary is also still looking for its first goal on the year.  Haley Finazzo has taken four of the team's six shot attempts.  Juliana Caro has played the majority of the minutes in goal this season, sporting an 8.50 goals against average and a .630 save percentage.

Scouting Aquinas: The Saints enter the week having won four straight matches after a 4-1 triumph at Indiana Tech on Saturday (Oct. 2).  Aquinas heads to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes.  Hannah Crum leads Aquinas with 22 points, including a team-high eight goals.  Ariana Garcia leads the squad with eight assists.  Tairyn Webb has played most of the minutes in goal, sporting a 0.90 goals against average and a .829 save percentage.

Zacerkowny Has Big Week: After being held scoreless in 2021 entering the week, Annah Zacerkowny made a difference against both Indiana Tech and Michigan-Dearborn.  She drew an assist on the match-winning goal against the Warriors before scoring the match-tying tally versus the Wolverines.  With three points on the season, Zacerkowny now has eight for her career on three goals and two assists.

Best WHAC Start Ever: Lourdes' 2-0-1 start to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play is its best ever.  The Gray Wolves' previous best three-match start to league play was 2-1 in the 2019 season.

Match-Winners: Chloe Shaffer scored her second match-winning goal of the season against Indiana Tech.  The junior now has four match-winners for her career, tied for third most in program history.  She is just one shy of teammate Abigail Mann and Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019), as the duo hold the school record with five each.

Stingy Defense: Lourdes has yielded just seven goals in 960 minutes of action this season, a goals against average of 0.66.  The Gray Wolves have not conceded more than one goal in a match all year.  In addition, Lourdes has surrendered just 47 total shots on goal, an average of 4.7 per contest.

Against Ranked Foes: Lourdes will be looking for its first result ever against a NAIA top-25 opponent on Saturday when Aquinas visits Wildcat Stadium.  The Gray Wolves are 0-13 against ranked foes all-time.  Last season Lourdes faced three ranked opponents, falling to Northwestern Ohio at home and at Aquinas twice.

Most Ties in a Season: Lourdes entered the 2021 season having six draws total in the first six season's of the program.  The Gray Wolves have registered four already in the first 10 matches of this season.  The most ties in a year prior to this season were two in both 2017 and 2018. 

Mann on the Scoring Charts: Abigail Mann tallied her 12th goal of her career against Bethel (Ind.), third most all-time at Lourdes, She trails Clare Ciarlino (2016-2017) by one for second on the all-time list.  Mann has also moved into a tie with Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019) for second place with 31 career points.  

Gray Wolves Tabbed Ninth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in ninth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches.  The Gray Wolves were picked just behind eighth place Indiana Tech.  Aquinas was chosen to win the league crown.

Captains: Kerstyn Williams, and Olivia Pomponio are serving as the team's co-captains in 2021.  Both served in the leadership role in 2020 as well.

This and That: Lourdes is outshooting its opponents 130-90 this season ... 21 different Gray Wolves have started at least one match this season ... nine different Lourdes players have registered at least one point.
