Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Postseason play has arrived for the Lourdes University women's volleyball squad. The Gray Wolves will take to the court on Wednesday evening, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Cornerstone in a quarterfinal match-up.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 12th season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 215-163 (.569) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his 14th season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 235-198 (.543) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Cornerstone will be meeting for the 23rd time in a series that dates back to Oct. 8, 2011. The Golden Eagles hold a 14-8 all-time advantage over the Gray Wolves and are 8-0 against Lourdes in Grand Rapids, Mich. The two schools split their regular season meetings this season. Lourdes was a winner in four sets on Sept. 24 inside the Ebeid Rec Center before Cornerstone won the Oct. 23 meeting in Grand Rapids in four sets.
Wrapping Up Last Week: On Monday night, Lourdes went to Rochester Hills, Mich. for a make-up match and defeated Rochester (Mich.) 25-22, 15-25, 25-15, 25-7.
McKenna Hall hit .385 with 22 kills while
Alli Plasencio tallied 33 digs. The Gray Wolves remained on the road Wednesday night, posting a 25-14, 25-23, 25-18 sweep at Northwestern Ohio. Hall put down 13 kills and hit .321 while Plasencio recorded 18 digs. On Saturday, Lourdes closed out the home season with a 30-28, 16-25, 30-28, 18-25, 15-13 Homecoming setback against Rochester in the rematch.
Kylee McBride put down 20 kills while Plasencio registered 32 digs.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles had their nine-match winning streak snapped on Saturday in the regular season finale, falling at Madonna in four sets. Olivia Keelean leads Cornerstone offensively, hitting .215 with 413 kills (3.28/set). Aubrey Lenz has handed out 1,078 assists (9.14/set) over the course of the regular season while Rylie Walters has racked up 65 service aces (0.55/set). Defensively, Patsy Morris tops the Golden Eagles with 591 digs (5.01/set) while Kaylee Dykema has registered 123 blocks (1.32/set), including 24 of the solo variety.
Lourdes in the WHAC Tournament: The Gray Wolves are making their 11th appearance in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament, having posted a 12-9 mark in the event. Lourdes won the championship in both 2015 and 2016. The Gray Wolves dropped their quarterfinal match in 2020 (actually played April 6, 2021) at Aquinas in straight sets.
Plasencio Earns WHAC Honor: Alli Plasencio was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Defender of the Week for her efforts last week. The senior tallied 83 digs (6.91/set) over the three contests while adding 15 assists. Plasencio also added three service aces for the Gray Wolves. In the first match of the week at Rochester (Mich.) on Monday, Plasencio tallied 33 digs in the four-set victory. She added 18 digs on Wednesday at Northwestern Ohio before concluding the week on Saturday in the rematch against Rochester with 32 digs and nine assists.
Double Trouble: Kortney Ellison notched her second double-double of the season in the finale against Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday. The sophomore recorded 12 kills and 10 digs in the five-set match. Ellison also had a double-double on Oct. 30 at Concordia (Mich.) with 14 kills and 21 digs. For the year her double-double brings the team's total to 27 for the season.
Katey Stakolich leads the Gray Wolves with 10 double-doubles on the year.
Hitting Percentage Key to Success: When Lourdes has had a hitting percentage higher than that of its opponent this season the Gray Wolves have had success. Lourdes is a perfect 8-0 this year when hitting better than the opposition but are just 4-17 when the attack percentage is lower.
Serving Up Aces: Lydia Landoll has come off the bench as a serving sub for a majority of the year and executed to perfection. The freshman has recorded 36 services aces, most on the roster, while committing just 14 miscues.
Moving Up the Single Season Charts: Alli Plasencio has recorded 581 digs in 2021, fourth most in a single season in program history. She is six digs shy of Michi Jimenez's 2013 total of 587 that ranks third most all-time. Angelica Dippold is the school's single season record holder with 597 digs in 2017.
On the Block: Michaela Eisenhauer and
Cammy Smith rank fourth and fifth respectively on the school's career blocks list. Eisenhauer has 140 rejections and Smith has 128 blocks, tied with Andrea Brown (2012-2013). Ave Stout (2015-2016) is third all-time with 194 career blocks.
Plasencio All Over the Career Record Books: Alli Plasencio enters the week ranked third in program history with 1,557 career digs. She is 48 behind Angelica Dippold (2016-2019) for second all-time. Plasencio also is third on the career ace charts with 96, eight behind Stef Comte (2013-2016) for second. Plasencio ranks fifth in school history having appeared in 378 sets all-time, one behind Lexie Curtis' (2013-2016) fourth place total. Plasencio is also seventh all-time at Lourdes having appeared in 103 career matches, three fewer than Ali Mass (2010-2013) for sixth.
This and That: Alli Plasencio is the only Gray Wolf to play all 108 sets this season ... Lourdes has more service aces (193) than service errors (171) this season ... the Gray Wolves are 4-11 on the road this season and 72-67 all-time when playing on their opponent's home court.
