Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes women's volleyball returns home to the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center for the first time in more than a month on Wednesday as the Gray Wolves host 19th-ranked Madonna. Lourdes continues the homestand on Friday evening entertaining undefeated Cornerstone before returning to the road on Sunday to face Rochester (Mich.).
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 11th season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 198-138 (.589) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his 11th season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 218-173 (.558) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Madonna leads the all-time series against Lourdes 10-9 dating back to Oct. 8, 2010. The Gray Wolves won the two regular season meetings against the Crusaders last season, in straight sets at home and in five sets in Livonia, Mich., before Madonna posted a four-set win in the WHAC tournament semifinals. The series is tied 2-2 inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Cornerstone is 12-7 all-time against Lourdes dating back to Oct. 8, 2011. The Golden Eagles won the first meeting of the season between the two schools in four sets on Jan. 29 in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Gray Wolves hold a 3-2 series edge in matches played inside the Ebeid Rec Center. Lourdes is 9-1 all-time against Rochester (Mich.) in a series that began Aug. 21, 2010. The Gray Wolves have won nine straight meetings after sweeping the season series in 2019, both in straight sets. The Gray Wolves are 4-0 all-time against the Warriors in Rochester Hills, Mich.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes fell 25-9, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 on Saturday evening at Lawrence Tech.
Vanessa Villarreal tallied a team-high 14 kills while
Kennedy Ames and
Yasmin Assis had 16 digs each. The Gray Wolves dropped another four-set match at Siena Heights on Sunday 14-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21. Villarreal tallied 23 kills and hit .395 while
Alli Plasencio registered 15 digs.
Scouting Madonna: The Crusaders enter the week after being swept by Cornerstone last Friday. Madonna plays at Rochester (Mich.) on Tuesday before visiting Lourdes. Jodie Kelly has tallied 96 kills on the year while swinging at a .258 clip. Jordyn Dawson has handed out a team-high 114 assists while Olivia Sweeney has recorded eight service aces. Sweeney also leads the defense with 97 digs while DJ Sargent has tallied 15 blocks.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles remained undefeated with a three-set sweep of 19th-ranked Madonna on Friday. Cornerstone travels to Siena Heights on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Bailey Cummings leads Cornerstone with 99 kills while Alexis Angus is hitting .284. Kayla Clark has a team-high 340 assists and Rylie Walters leads the team with 19 service aces. Defensively, Patsy Morris has tallied 174 digs while Brooke Nicholson has registered 31 blocks.
Scouting Rochester (Mich.): The Warriors have dropped back-to-back matches after falling in four sets to Northwestern Ohio on Feb. 9. Rochester hosts Madonna and Siena Heights this week before Lourdes visits. Mackenzie Winger has tallied a team-high 116 kills while Autumn Deshetsky has handed out 162 assists. Carly Rodman has registered 16 service aces. Defensively, Rodman also leads Rochester with 240 digs while Olivia Pannecouk has 28 blocks.
Villarreal Breaks Out: Vanessa Villarreal had recorded just had 28 career kills in her first two-plus seasons with the Gray Wolves before having a huge weekend for Lourdes. The junior tallied a team-high 14 kills against Lawrence Tech, the first double figure kill total of her career. Villarreal followed that effort up on Sunday with a career-high 23 kills while hitting .395 at Siena Heights.
In the Record Books: Alli Plasencio has moved into fourth place in program history with 780 career digs, passing Hannah Thompson (2010-2011) on the all-time charts. She is 47 digs shy of
Molly Shonk's (2015-2016) third place total of 827.
Yasmin Assis has moved into ninth in Gray Wolf history with 505 career assists. She trails
Mallory Lenhart (2014-2015) by 146 for eighth on the all-time charts.
Nearing 200: Lourdes is just two victories shy of 200 in the program's history. Head coach
Greg Reitz has been a part of all 198 wins today for the Gray Wolves. Lourdes enters the weekend with a 198-133 all-time record.
A Big Block: Michaela Eisenhauer has tallied 21 blocks through the first five matches of the season for the Gray Wolves. Her 1.05 blocks per set this season currently rank her 45th in the NAIA.
Facing Ranked Foes: Lourdes is 15-35 all-time against ranked opponents heading into Wednesday's match with 19th-ranked Madonna. Lourdes last downed a ranked foe on Sept. 19, 2018, a four-set victory over #23 Madonna. The Gray Wolves were 0-3 against ranked teams last season.
Lourdes Picked Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was projected to finish in sixth place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference this season in a preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches last fall. Madonna was picked to win the regular title with Aquinas tabbed runner-up.
