The Lourdes University men's tennis team earned the program's first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory ever on Monday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves defeated Concordia (Mich.) 4-3 at Shadow Valley-Maumee.
"It was a very impressive and dominant performance in both singles and doubles today," head coach
Megan Miller said afterwards. "They came out in doubles controlling every point and carried that right over into singles. Getting our first ever conference win feels amazing. This team works so hard, and I am excited to see them compete in the conference tournament."
With only four players, the Gray Wolves had to rally after suffering defaults at fifth and sixth singles and third doubles, allowing Concordia (1-9, 0-2 WHAC) to earn a pair of points.
Lourdes came out quickly in doubles to win at both of the top two spots and secure the match's all important opening point.
Aryan Mittal (Ghaziabad, India/DPS Indirapuram) and
Ulises Barradas (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/UE Colegio Madre Guadalupe) cruised to a 6-0 win at first doubles while
Dominick Brock (Grant, Mich./Grant H.S.) and
Niladri Aich (Cooch Behar, India/Maumee Valley Country Day [Ohio] H.S.) teamed for a 6-1 victory at number two.
Barradas tied the match 2-2 with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at second singles before Mittal put the Gray Wolves on top with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the top of the order. Aich clinched the victory for Lourdes with his 6-0, 7-5 win at third singles. Brock played a tight match for the Gray Wolves at number four before falling 6-4, 6-2.
Lourdes (3-6, 1-4) will return to the courts on Tuesday afternoon, making up a match at Northwestern Ohio. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. at Westwood Tennis & Fitness Center.
