Lourdes saw its inaugural men's tennis season come to a close on Saturday as the Gray Wolves dropped a 7-0 decision to Aquinas in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament at MVP Sportsplex in Grand Rapids, Mich.
"This was a disappointing end to the season, but the guys played well today and definitely made Aquinas work for the win," head coach
Megan Miller said afterwards. "We made improvements in doubles and singles from the first time we played them but just couldn't pull out the tight games today. I'm still so proud of this team and it has been great to watch them grow as individual players throughout the season. We are excited to get back to work next fall."
The Saints took the opening point sweeping doubles. After winning the third spot by default, Aquinas clinched the point with a 6-1 win at the second spot over
Kareem Badr (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) and
Dominick Brock (Grant, Mich./Grant H.S.). Aquinas also picked up a 6-3 win over
Aryan Mittal (Ghaziabad, India/DPS Indirapuram) and
Ulises Barradas (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/UE Colegio Madre Guadalupe) at the top of the lineup.
Aquinas (4-4) made it 2-0 with a default win at sixth singles. Aich then fell 6-0, 6-0 at number three and Brock suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback at the fifth spot as the Saints secured the win. Badr dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision at fourth singles.
Mittal and Barradas both took a set to a tie-breaker, but still fell in straight sets. Mittal suffered a 6-2, 7-6 (4) defeat at number one while Barradas lost 7-6 (3), 6-1 at second singles.
Lourdes season comes to an end with a 3-8 record.
