In a match that came down to number one singles, Lourdes earned its first victory in program history on Thursday afternoon, defeating Grace Christian 4-3 at Shadow Valley-Maumee.
"We started out very strong in doubles and took that confidence right into singles play," head coach
Megan Miller said. "Every singles match was incredible to watch, and to win the first match of the season 4-3 is amazing. I am so proud of this team and all of the hard work they have put in this season."
The Gray Wolves had to win both doubles matches to take the first point of the match after third doubles was defaulted.
Annsley Mann (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) and
Jordan Bucher (North Baltimore, Ohio/North Baltimore H.S.) teamed for a 6-4 win at the second spot. Moments later,
Niki Polce (New Boston, Mich./Huron H.S.) and
Vanessa Skouroukos (Toledo, Ohio/Waite H.S.) clinched the point with a 6-4 win at the top of the lineup.
Grace Christian took fifth and sixth singles by default and Bucher fell 6-2, 6-3 at the fourth spot, but Lourdes was able to win at the top of the order to clinch the victory. Polce scored a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at third singles before Skouroukos tied the match 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the second spot. Mann secured the team win with her 6-3, 6-0 victory at the top of the lineup.
Lourdes (1-8) will remain home on Sunday afternoon, facing Cornerstone. First serve is set for noon at Shadow Valley.
