MAUMEE, Ohio (LourdesAthletics.com) – The Lourdes University women's tennis picked up a key conference win on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Cornerstone University 6-1 at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
"Regardless of the circumstances, this team has made incremental improvements each season, and they have a lot to be proud of," said head coach Epifani Jones.
The Gray Wolves secured the doubles point as the duo of Vanessa Skouroukos and Mallory Schardt cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, while Luciana Merediz and Winter Richburg adding a win by default at No. 3. Laura Ortiz and Olivia Schoppa battled at the top spot but dropped a narrow 6-3 decision.
In singles play, Lourdes captured five of six matches. Schardt fell in straight sets at No. 1 (6-2, 6-2), but Schoppa and Ortiz responded with commanding 6-1, 6-0 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Merediz earned a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 4, and Skouroukos rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court five. Richburg collected a win by default at No. 6 singles.
With the win, Lourdes improves to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in WHAC play, marking the first time in program history the team has finished .500 in league play.
