Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes looks to remain unbeaten on Tuesday, having alternated wins and draws through six matches, as the Gray Wolves host Goshen in the final non-conference contest of the season. Lourdes opens Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, taking to the road to face Siena Heights.
Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her seventh season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Phillips has a 39-61-9 (.399) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Goshen are meeting on the pitch in women's soccer for the first time ever on Tuesday afternoon. Siena Heights holds a 6-0-1 all-time series edge against Lourdes dating back to Oct. 31, 2015. The Saints have won the last three meetings between the two schools after posting a 1-0 win in Adrian, Mich. on Oct. 10, 2020. Siena Heights has won all three previous meetings in Adrian.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes and Huntington battled for 90 minutes on Tuesday evening (Sept. 14) before playing to a scoreless draw. Overtime was not played due to a thunderstorm that moved into the area following regulation.
Lily Yoder made two saves for the Gray Wolves to earn a shutout. On Saturday (Sept. 18), Lourdes rallied from a goal down to defeat Bethel (Ind.) 2-1.
Brynn McGarvey tied the match early in the second half while
Abigail Mann converted a penalty kick for the match-winner with 23:06 to play.
Kerstyn Williams made three saves between the posts for Lourdes.
Scouting Goshen: The Maple Leafs have dropped back-to-back matches following a 1-0 overtime setback at home against Indiana Tech on Wednesday (Sept. 15). Paige Renshaw leads Goshen in scoring with three goals and an assist for seven points while Seja Lang has also scored three times. Brynja Rut Hjartardottir has a team-leading three assists. in goal, MaKiah McCain has played a majority of the minutes for the Maple Leafs, sporting a 1.03 goals against average and a .700 save percentage.
Scouting Siena Heights: The Saints enter WHAC play having won five consecutive matches, all via shutouts, after downing Thomas More 2-0 on Sunday (Sept. 19) at home. Marissa Young leads Siena Heights with six goals and 12 points while Sarah Ammon has added a pair of goals and a team-leading two assists for six points. In goal, Kara Bishop has played nearly 600 minutes while sporting a 0.15 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.
Lourdes in WHAC Openers: Lourdes is 2-4 all-time in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference openers. The Gray Wolves have dropped three straight league openers after falling at home to Cornerstone 1-0 last season. The Gray Wolves last won a conference opener in 2017, a 4-1 victory on the road at Rochester (Mich.).
The Program's Best Start: For the first time in program history, Lourdes remains unbeaten through six matches (3-0-3), having earned at least a draw in each contest. The previous best four-match start came in 2019 when Lourdes went 4-2 to begin the year on the way to matching the school record with eight wins.
Most Ties in a Season: Lourdes entered the 2021 season having six draws total in the first six season's of the program. The most ties in a year prior to this season were two in both 2017 and 2018.
Lightning Prevents Overtime: For the first time in program history, Lourdes did not play overtime in a tie game on Tuesday against Huntington. Lightning and a thunderstorm that rolled in prevented the extra session, leading to the 90-minute draw.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Ninth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in ninth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind eighth place Indiana Tech. Aquinas was chosen to win the league crown.
Multi goal Scorers: Abigail Mann and
Brynn McGarvey both found the back of the net in the win over Bethel (Ind.), becoming the first Gray Wolves this year with more than one goal. Mann now leads Lourdes with five total points on two goals and an assist while McGarvey has four points on two goals.
Mann Moves Up Scoring Charts: Abigail Mann tallied her 12th goal of her career against Bethel (Ind.). She now has 12 career goals, third most all-time at Lourdes, one behind Clare Ciarlino (2016-2017) for second. She also moved into a tie with Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019) for second place with 31 career points.
First Collegiate Shutout: Lily Yoder notched her first shutout as a Gray Wolf last Tuesday in the scoreless draw with Huntington. She now has a 0.92 goals against average on the season and a 1.47 career GAA.
Lots of Appearances: Erin Caldwell has moved into fifth in program history with 55 career appearances.
Kerstyn Williams has is now sixth all-time at Lourdes having stepped on to the pitch 54 times.
Captains: Kerstyn Williams, and
Olivia Pomponio will serve as the team's co-captains in 2020. Both served in the leadership role in 2020 as well.
This and That: Lourdes has yielded just five goals in 580 minutes of action ... the Gray Wolves have taken 31 corner kicks while allowing just 15 ...
