Lourdes began the spring portion of its schedule and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a pair of matches at Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich. The Gray Wolve fell 4-0 to Lawrence Tech in the opener before dropping a 4-0 decision to 12
th-ranked Northwestern Ohio in match two.
"The men kicked off the season with a set of matches that tested their training," head coach
Epifani Jones said afterwards. "With so much growth in such a short time, it's obvious the remainder of the season is set to be exciting."
In doubles, Lawrence Tech took the first point of the match with a 6-0 win at the second spot over
Kareem Badr (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) and
Alvaro Trillo-Sanchez (Madrid, Spain/Churchill County [Nev.] H.S.). The Blue Devils won third doubles by default, so the top doubles match was halted when the point was decided.
In singles, Lawrence Tech (7-8, 1-0 WHAC) took the sixth spot by default. Brock then fell 6-0, 6-1 at number five singles while
Ulises Barradas (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/UE Colegio Madre Guadalupe) suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback at the top of the lineup. Again, the other three matches were abandoned as the overall match was decided.
Northwestern Ohio (9-2, 2-0) earned victories at third through sixth singles to clinch the match against the Gray Wolves in the evening. Trillo-Sanchez dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at third singles while Badr fell by the same score at the fourth spot. At fifth singles,
Dominick Brock (Grant, Mich./Grant H.S.) fell 6-0, 6-0 while the Racers took sixth singles by default.
Doubles action was not completed in the match against Northwestern Ohio.
