Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: Lourdes will open its eighth season of intercollegiate women's soccer on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Rio Grande at Wildcat Stadium. Lourdes will play three of its first four non-conference contests at home this season.
Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her eighth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Phillips has a 44-65-13 (.414) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 1-0-1 all-time against Rio Grande in a series that began Sept. 1, 2019. The Gray Wolves and Red Storm played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw last season in Chillicothe, Ohio in a neutral site match. Lourdes won the only previous match against Rio Grande at Wildcat Stadium, 3-1, during the 2019 campaign.
Wrapping Up 2021: Lourdes finished the 2021 season with an 8-4-7 record overall. The Gray Wolves had a 5-2-4 mark in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play, placing fifth in the league ledger. Lourdes traveled to Siena Heights in the WHAC tournament quarterfinals, falling to the Saints 4-2.
Scouting Rio Grande: The Red Storm are also opening their 2022 season on Wednesday. Rio Grande went 11-6-2 overall and 10-1 in the River States Conference last season, falling to Ohio Valley in the tournament championship match. Isabel Ruff is the Red Storm's top returning scorer from last season after she scored seven goals and finished the year with 16 total points. Morgan Nutter played a majority of the minutes in goal in 2021 for Rio Grande, and returns after sporting a 0.77 goals against average and an .821 save percentage last year.
Lourdes in Season Openers: Lourdes is 2-3-2 all-time in season openers after tying with Rio Grande 1-1 after two overtimes to begin the 2021 campaign. The Gray Wolves last won a season opener in 2018, a 4-0 triumph at LaRoche. Lourdes is 1-0-1 when beginning the season on the road.
Gray Wolves in Home Openers: Lourdes is 2-4-1 all-time in home openers. The Gray Wolves have not won a home opener since defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene 1-0 to begin the 2016 season at Wildcat Stadium. Last year Lourdes battled Huntington to a scoreless draw in a match in which overtime was not played due to storms.
Facing the RSC: All-time, the Gray Wolves are 7-2-1 against current members of the River States Conference. In addition to the 1-0-1 record versus Rio Grande, Lourdes is 4-0 facing Point Park, 1-0 against Indiana East, and 1-2 versus Ohio Christian.
2021 Award Winners: Lourdes returns all three of its Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honorees from 2021.
Emmy Rodger was named the WHAC Newcomer of the Year and a First Team All-WHAC selection in 2021 after notching a 0.98 goals against average and an .851 save percentage while logging four shutouts.
Abigail Mann earned Second Team All-WHAC honors after recording a team-high 17 points with six goals and a team-best five assists.
Brynn McGarvey was selected to the WHAC All-Newcomer Team after scoring six goals and finishing with 13 points as a freshman.
Top Returning Scorer: In addition to
Abigail Mann and
Brynn McGarvey returning to the lineup after scoring six goals each last season, the Gray Wolves also return their top goal scorer from 2021.
Chloe Shaffer found the back of the net eight times, setting a new single season record at Lourdes, including scoring three match-winning goals.
A Record Holder in Goal: Emmy Rodger is the lone goalkeeper on the roster for Lourdes this season but the sophomore is coming off a record-setting 2021 season. She set a new school single season mark with a 0.98 goals against average as well as a new record with an .851 save percentage. Her 74 total saves already rank her fourth on the school's career list in that category and her four shutouts are fourth most by a goalkeeper all-time at Lourdes.
Mann Holds Career Records: Senior
Abigail Mann enters the season holding all of the school's career offensive records already. The senior has scored 16 career goals, two more than any other player in program history, and has 11 career assists, also two more than second place. Mann's 43 career points are nine in front of second play. She also holds the school mark with 157 shot attempts, the only Gray Wolf with more than 100 on the list. Mann's five match-winning goals are tied with Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019) and current teammate
Chloe Shaffer for most in school history.
No Overtime This Season: After playing seven overtime matches and registering seven draws last season, Lourdes is assured of playing no more than 90 minutes each night during the regular season this year. College soccer eliminated overtime for the 2022 season and will only use extra time for advancement in postseason play.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in sixth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fifth place Lawrence Tech. Aquinas was chosen to win the league crown.
