Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: Lourdes begins its 13th season of intercollegiate volleyball this weekend playing host to the Gray Wolf Invitational inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. Lourdes will battle Bluefield and Grace on Friday before hosting Saint Xavier and Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday.
Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his 13th season on the Lourdes bench,
Greg Reitz has a 215-164 (.567) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his 15th season overall as a women's head coach, Reitz has a 235-199 (.541) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.
Series Notes: Lourdes will be meeting Bluefield for the first time ever on Friday afternoon to open the 2022 season. Grace holds a 2-1 series edge against the Gray Wolves dating back to Aug. 23, 2013. Lourdes won the last meeting between the two schools, and only one ever played in the Ebeid Rec Center, 3-1, during the 2019 season. Saint Xavier is 4-2 against Lourdes in a series that began Sept. 21, 2013. The Cougars have won the last three meetings between the two schools, including a 3-0 sweep in Chicago, Ill. in 2021. Mount Vernon Nazarene is 3-1 against the Gray Wolves going back to Oct. 23, 2010. The Cougars won last season's meeting in Mount Vernon, Ohio in four sets.
Wrapping Up 2021: Lourdes finished the 2021 season with a 12-18 record overall and an 8-12 mark in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Gray Wolves finished seventh in the regular season standings before falling in three sets at Cornerstone in the WHAC tournament quarterfinals.
Scouting Bluefield: The Rams are opening their season against Lourdes on Friday. Bluefield went 20-12 in 2021 while posting a 16-5 mark in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, finishing in third place in the regular season.
Scouting Grace: The Lancers opened their season going 3-1 at the Onset Invitational last weekend. Cassadi Colbert has a team-high 37 kills and is hitting .329 while Morgan Syoen has handed out 147 assists. Jadyn Ross racked up seven service aces on opening weekend. Defensively, Grace Erwin picked up 90 digs while Livia Tate was involved in 13 blocks.
Scouting Saint Xavier: The Cougars open their 2022 season this weekend at Lourdes. Saint Xavier went 28-4 in 2021, including a perfect 18-0 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Cougars advanced to the NAIA National Championships, falling in four sets to Dakota Wesleyan.
Scouting Mount Vernon Nazarene: The Cougars won all four matches at the Onsted Invitational last weekend to open the 2022 season. Erica Gasser hit .346 with 29 kills while Ashley Stumperth also had 29 kills to begin the year. Paige Brenner handed out 64 assists while Ashley Merrick recorded five service aces. Defensively, Molly Galaszewski picked up 35 digs while Gasser and Faith Maloney each were involved in eight blocks.
Lourdes in Season Openers: Lourdes is 6-6 all-time in season-opening matches. The Gray Wolves have dropped five of their last six openers after falling in straight sets at Saint Xavier in last season's first match. Lourdes last won an opener in 2018, a four-set triumph at home against Taylor.
Gray Wolves in Home Openers: Lourdes is 10-2 all-time in home openers, including 5-1 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center. The Gray Wolves began the home slate in 2021 with a straight sets win over Northwestern Ohio in a match that also served as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener.
2021 Award Winners: McKenna Hall and
Alli Plasencio both earned Second Team All Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference honors last season. Hall had a team-leading 2.56 kills per set (161 total) and hit .164 while also adding 2.63 digs per set (166 total). Plasencio picked up 5.41 digs per stanza for the Gray Wolves, playing all 111 sets. Her 601 total digs set a new Lourdes single season school record.
Plasencio All Over the Record Books: Alli Plasencio enters the season ranked third in program history with 1,577 career digs. She is just 28 behind Angelica Dippold (2016-2019) for second all-time. Plasencio also ranks third all-time with 96 service aces, needing eight more to match Stef Comte (2013-2016) for second on the career charts. Plasencio ranks fourth in school history having appeared in 381 sets all-time, 13 behind Angelica Dippold's (2016-2019) third place total. Plasencio is sixth with 104 matches played, two appearances shy of Ali Mass (2010-2013) for fifth all-time at Lourdes.
Also in the Record Books: Kylee McBride begins the year 10th all-time at Lourdes with 534 career kills, 16 behind Brooke Hearn (2010-2011) for ninth.
Cammy Smith is in sixth place on the blocks list with 129, trailing Andrea Brown (2012-2013) by nine for fifth place.
Katey Stakolich is seventh in school history with 736 career assists, needing 156 more to match Jami Markus (2017-2018) for sixth place.
