Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After a season-opening victory, Lourdes takes to the road for the first time in 2022 on Saturday afternoon. The Gray Wolves travel to Arlington Heights, Ill. for a matinee contest against Roosevelt.
Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her eighth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Phillips has a 45-65-13 (.419) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes and Roosevelt will be meeting on the pitch in women's soccer for the first time ever on Saturday afternoon.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Brynn McGarvey scored the match-winning goal with 12:39 to play as Lourdes opened the 2022 season with a 2-1 victory over Rio Grande at Wildcat Stadium.
Kayla Dillinger put the Gray Wolves in front in the 20th minute before the Red Storm evened the match at one just under seven minutes into the second half.
Emmy Rodger made four saves in goal for the Gray Wolves.
Scouting Roosevelt: The Lakers opened their 2022 season on Aug. 27, falling 4-1 at Indiana Wesleyan. Meaghan Smith scored the lone goal for Roosevelt. Roxana Hererra made four saves in goal for Roosevelt in nearly 64 minutes of action while Gaby Aguinaga-Hernandez made two saves over 26 minutes.
Heilman Earns WHAC Honor: Karlie Heilman was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career following the season opener. The junior defender was the only Gray Wolf field player to play all 90 minutes against Rio Grande. She anchored the defense that yielded just eight total shot attempts in the match.
Facing the CCAC: All-time, the Gray Wolves are 2-1-2 against current members of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Gray Wolves are 1-0 against Judson and 1-0-1 versus Holy Cross (Ind.). In addition, Lourdes is 0-0-1 against Saint Xavier and 0-1 against Trinity International. The Gray Wolves have not played the other 10 members of the league.
Matching Last Year's Total: It took
Kayla Dillinger just under 20 minutes to match her entire goal total from 2021. The sophomore found the back of the net for the first goal of the season, and the second of Dillinger's career.
Moving Up the Scoring List: Brynn McGarvey scored her seventh career goal in the opener against Rio Grande, moving her into a tie with
Katie Varney (2019-2021) for seventh on the school's all-time goals list. McGarvey also has 15 points now, moving into eighth place on the all-time charts, two points behind Jada Foster (2015-2016) for seventh. The match-winner was the third of her career, moving into a tie with Clare Ciarlino (2016-2017) for sixth all-time.
Lending a Helping Foot: Chloe Shaffer and
Abigail Mann both had assists in the opener for the Gray Wolves. Mann extended her school record with the 12th of her career while Shaffer handed out her fifth career helper, tied with Tara Blundell (2015, 2017) for fifth on the all-time charts at Lourdes.
A Record Holder in Goal: Emmy Rodger is the lone goalkeeper on the roster for Lourdes this season but the sophomore is coming off a record-setting 2021 season. Her 78 saves already rank her fourth on the school's career list and her four shutouts are fourth most by a goalkeeper all-time at Lourdes.
Mann Holds Career Records: Senior
Abigail Mann already holds all of the school's career offensive records already. The senior has scored 16 career goals, two more than any other player in program history, and notched her 12th career assist in the season opener, three more than second place. Mann's 44 career points are 10 in front of second place as well. She also holds the school mark with 160 shot attempts, the only Gray Wolf with more than 100 on the list. Mann's five match-winning goals are tied with Karlie O'Keefe (2016-2019) and current teammate
Chloe Shaffer for most in school history.
That's a Lot of Action: Jules Snowden's appearance in the season opener was the 57 of her career, fifth most in program history. The next time she steps onto the pitch, Snowden will match Alyssa Swanson (2015-2018) for fourth in matches played in school history. Snowden also ranks third in career starts with 53, eight behind Maria Schmidt (2017-2020) for second.
Erin Caldwell is tied for fifth with 56 career appearances while her 51 starts ranks fourth all-time.
Making Their Debuts: Kim Nagel drew a start in her first match at Lourdes after transferring from Tiffin prior to the start of the season. In addition, freshmen
Zoey Trout,
Keira Boskovich,
Trina Spuck,
Sophia Larabee,
Chloe Hess, and
Natalie Samples appeared in the first collegiate matches against Rio Grande.
Controlling the Offense: Lourdes had numerous scoring opportunities against Rio Grande to begin the year. The Gray Wolves had 23 total shot attempts in the match, including 11 on goal, which was more than the total number of shot attempts yielded by the Lourdes defense (8).
Gray Wolves Tabbed Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in sixth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fifth place Lawrence Tech. Aquinas was chosen to win the league crown.
