Lourdes improved to 3-0 on the season Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Wittenberg 5-4 at the Albrecht Tennis Center in Springfield, Ohio.
"Today provided an opportunity for every participant to show the measure of his character," head coach
Epifani Jones said after the match. "From the sudden death point at first doubles to the three third-set finishes, all the challenges were well met. Joshua's debut was almost as exciting as Alvaro's second set comeback. To be two points from losing the match to then finding another gear is the competitive surge a team needs."
Wittenberg (0-2) took the early lead in the match with victories in two of the three doubles contests. The Gray Wolf team of
Niladri Aich (Cooch Behar, India/Maumee Valley Country Day H.S. [Ohio]) and
Cody Keller (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) improved to 3-0 as a team with their 8-2 victory at the third spot. The Tigers won a narrow 8-6 match over
Ondrej Skokan (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Dasicka 1083) and
Theo Casadei (Annecy Le Vieux, France/CNED) at the top of the lineup. The Lourdes team of
Alvaro Trillo-Sanchez (Madrid, Spain/Churchill County H.S. [Nev.]) and
Luis Guzman (Santo Domingo, D.R./Cranston East H.S. [R.I.]) dropped an 8-2 decision at the second spot.
Lourdes rallied with victories in four of the six singles matches to claim the victory. Casadei was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at number two singles while Guzman notched a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at number three singles. Keller also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 in the sixth spot.
Josh Parrish (Columbus, Ohio/Cristo Rey H.S.), making his Gray Wolf debut, earned a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory at fifth singles.
Skokan and Trillo-Sanchez both forced a third set as well. Skokan fell 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 at the top of the lineup while Trillo-Sanchez dropped a 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-3 match in the fourth slot.
Lourdes will return to action Sept. 28-Oct. 1 at the ITA Midwest Regional. The event, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan, will take place at Sutter Tennis Center in Marion, Ind.
