Lourdes opened up the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 to Cornerstone inside Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
"The outcome was less than favorable, however, today provided an opportunity to see the Xs and Os in three dimensions and in real time," head coach
Epifani Jones said afterwards.
The Gray Wolves' top doubles team of
Cleo Moore (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International H.S.) and
Bella Chela (Lusaka, Zambia/Pretoria H.S. for Girls) forced a tie-break in their match before falling 7-6 (4).
"Bella and Cleo's loss was painful after having match point, but they clearly see they can compete at a higher level and that should be encouraging," Jones added.
Olivia Schoppa (Gutersloh/Stadtisches Gymnaskum Gutersloh) and
Laura Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Los Pinos) fell 6-2 at second doubles while
Mallory Schardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) and
Jordan Bucher (North Baltimore, Ohio/North Baltimore H.S.) suffered a 6-1 setback at the third spot.
In singles play, Cornerstone (3-2, 1-0 WHAC) won all six matches in straight sets.
