Upcoming in Gray Wolves Soccer: After a season-opening victory over Roosevelt last weekend, Lourdes looks for its first 2-0 start to a season since 2018 on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves take to the road for the first time in 2023 with a visit to Bethel (Ind.).
Head Coach Jackie Phillips: In her ninth season on the Lourdes bench,
Jackie Phillips has a 54-70-17 (.443) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves as well as overall as a head coach. Â She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 4-1-1 all-time against Bethel (Ind.) in a series that began Sept. 7, 2016. Â The Gray Wolves have won three straight in the series and are unbeaten (4-0-1) over the last five contests after a 2-1 win over the Pilots in Mishawaka, Ind. last season. Â All-time, the series is tied 1-1-1 in games played in Mishawaka.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes opened its 2023 season on Sunday (Aug. 27) with a 4-0 victory over Roosevelt at Wildcat Stadium. Â
Kayla Dillinger scored the match-winning goal in the 16th minute while
Taylir Lynam,
Laura Rincon, and
Sydney Woodring all found the back of the net in the first half as well. Â
Emmy Rodgers made three saves over the first 75 minutes while
Samarah Arendsen added a pair of stops late in the match.
Scouting Bethel (Ind.): The Pilots had their three-match season-opening win streak snapped on Tuesday evening with a 1-0 setback at home against Saint Xavier. Â Leena Thomas leads Bethel with four goals and 10 points on the season while Audrey Lerch has found the back of the net three times and has eight total points. Â Giulia Franco shares the team assist lead with Thomas and Lerch, each having handed out two helpers. Â Jael Schubert has played a majority of the minutes in goal, sporting a 0.81 goals against average and an .824 save percentage.
Facing the Crossroads League: Outside of facing Bethel (Ind.), the Gray Wolves have not had a great deal of success against the Crossroads League, posting a 6-11-3 mark against current league foes. Â In addition to the four victories over the Pilots, Lourdes also has one win against both Mount Vernon Nazarene and Huntington.
Lourdes in Road Openers: Lourdes is 3-3-2 all-time in its first true road match of the season. Â Last year the Gray Wolves began the road portion of its schedule with a scoreless draw at Roosevelt. Â Lourdes last win in a road opener came in 2021, a 2-1 triumph at Point Park.
Captains Names: Lourdes has a pair of co-captains for the 2023 season. Â Simona Iacabacci and
Gianna Salatino in the leadership position. Â Iacabacci is a first time team captain while Salatino is serving in the role for the second consecutive season.
Quite the Debuts: Taylir Lynam and
Laura Rincon both scored in their debuts with Lourdes. Â For Lynam, a freshman, it marked her first collegiate goal and put the Gray Wolves in front 2-0. Â Rincon, a junior transfer, scored for the first time since her freshman season when she played for Iowa Wesleyan.
Another Collegiate First: Sydney Woodring also tallied her first collegiate goal for the Gray Wolves on Sunday to wrap up the scoring. Â The Lourdes sophomore appeared in five matches as a rookie last season, taking six shot attempts, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Lending a Helping Foot Twice: Keira Boskovich and
Kayden Firsdon each had a pair of assists in the season-opening victory. Â Boskovich had two career points after scoring a goal last year, but the helpers were the first two of her career. Â Firsdon had a pair of assists while making her collegiate debut.
Moving Up the Scoring List: Kayla Dillinger entered the season as the Gray Wolves top returning scorer and added to that total in the opener. Â She scored the match-winning goal against Roosevelt, giving her three for her career, tying her with Clare Ciarlino (2016-2017) for seventh in program history. Â The goal was Dillinger's sixth of her career, moving her into 10th place alone on Lourdes' all-time list. Â Dillinger's 15 career points also move her into 10th place on that list.
A Record Holder in Goal: Emmy Rodger is programs' the all-time leader with a 0.81 goals against, an .840 save percentage, and 14 shutouts. Â She also ranks third in program history with 137 total saves.
Making Their Debuts: In addition to
Taylir Lynam,
Laura Rincon, and
Kayden Firsdon, who registered points in their Lourdes debut against Roosevelt, five other Gray Wolves took to the field wearing the terra cotta and black for the first time. Â
Cecily Hughes made her first appearance at Lourdes after transferring from the University of Detroit Mercy while
Samarah Arendsen,
Elise Dodson,
Emily Wade, and
Chloe Wittbrodt made their collegiate debuts as freshmen.
Gray Wolves Tabbed Sixth in WHAC Preseason Poll: Lourdes was selected to finish in sixth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Â The Gray Wolves were picked just behind fifth place Northwestern Ohio. Â Aquinas was chosen to win the league crown.
This and That: Lourdes improved to 54-70-17 all-time with its season-opening victory ... the Gray Wolves are 22-40-8 all-time in true road matches ... the Gray Wolves held a 13-9 shot advantage against Roosevelt in the season opener, including an 8-5 edge on net ... the four goals are the most in a match for Lourdes since scoring four against Cleary on Oct. 26, 2022 ... the four tallies marked the most in a season-opener since a 4-0 triumph at La Roche in 2018 ... Lourdes registered a shutout in its season opener for the fourth time in program  history.
