LIVONIA, Mich. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University women's soccer team made history Wednesday afternoon by securing its 10th victory of the season, setting a new program record for single-season wins. With a thrilling 1-0 result on the road at Madonna University, the Gray Wolves not only clinched their spot in the record books but also positioned themselves as strong contenders for hosting the upcoming opening-round of the conference tournament.
The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference victory improved the Gray Wolves league record to 7-3, good for fourth in the conference standings behind Aquinas College (10-0), Siena Heights University (8-1-2), and the University of Northwestern Ohio (8-1-1). The Gray Wolves overall season record sits at 10-3-1, the best in program history, with a 6-0-1 home stance.
Junior Cecily Hughes opened the scoring exactly 29 minutes into the match, netting her second career goal with a well-placed assist from sophomore Taylir Lynam, giving the Gray Wolves an early 1-0 advantage heading into the second half.
Lourdes held strong defensively, securing their 10th season shutout and cruising to a 1-0 road victory to make program history. In goal was senior goalkeeper Emmy Roger, who picked up her ninth clean-sheet of the season, and the 28th of her career. Prior to the season, the senior held the record for most shutouts in a career with 19.
Match Notes:
- Head Coach Jackie Phillip (69-81-20) is 10-3-1 on the season, the best in program history, thus far. Prior to the 2024 campaign, the 2022 team held the record for most single-season wins with their nine. That squad finished the regular-season 9-5-4.
- Additionally, the conference victory marked the seventh of the season, also a program-record, topping the six from the 2022 campaign. In that season, the Gray Wolves finished 6-4-1 in the WHAC and advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Lawrence Tech University, 1-0 in the opening-round. Lourdes then fell 2-0 to Madonna in the semi's, which was the first semi-finals appearance for the Gray Wolves, to conclude the post-season.
- The women's team has made an appearance in six WHAC tournaments with the 2022 team going the furthest.
- With the 1-0 result, the team has now achieved a total of 62 program shutouts, including 10 this season, matching the total recorded by the 2022 team.
