Lourdes picked up its first win of the 2023-2024 season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Concordia (Mich.) 5-2 inside Shadow Valley.
"These ladies work very hard on and off the court so it's nice to see them rewarded with a win today," head coach
Epifani Jones said afterwards. "They are a cohesive unit and their willingness to work together is evident in improved results."
Lourdes opened by winning the doubles point.
Mallory Schardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) and
Olivia Schoppa (Gutersloh, Germany/Stadtisches Gymnasium Gutersloh) posted a win in a tie-break at the top of the lineup 7-6 (5) while
Bella Chela (Lusaka, Zambia/Pretoria H.S. for Girls) and
Laura Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Los Pinos) teamed for a 6-2 win at the second spot. Concordia (2-5, 0-2 WHAC) picked up a win at third doubles 6-2 over
Luciana Merediz (Lima, Peru/Colegio Nuestra Senora del Carmen) and
Vanessa Skouroukos (Toledo, Ohio/Waite H.S.).
In singles play, Lourdes won at the top four spots. Chela needed a third-set tie break to win at number one 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 while Schardt won a pair of tie-breaks at second singles. She trailed 5-1 in the second before winning the match 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5). Schoppa won 6-3, 6-4 at number three singles while Ortiz also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Merediz fell at five 6-3, 6-4 and Skouroukos dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision at the sixth spot.
Lourdes (1-3, 1-2) will return to the courts on March 15 as the Gray Wolves travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to face Indiana Tech. The first serve is set for noon at Wildwood Racquet Club.
