Facing 18
th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan for the second time in less than 10 days, Lourdes dropped a 7-0 decision to the Wildcats at Sutter Tennis Center in Marion, Ind. on Saturday afternoon.
"It's a great learning opportunity to play a nationally ranked team twice in a matter of weeks," head coach
Epifani Jones said afterwards. "The ladies are experiencing a rapid learning curve that should result in overall improvement."
Bella Chela (Lusaka, Zambia/Pretoria H.S. for Girls) and
Mallory Schardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) were locked in a tight battle at first doubles with Indiana Tech leading 3-2 when the match was abandoned because the point had been determined. Indiana Wesleyan (22-4) picked up 6-0 wins at both second and third doubles over the Gray Wolves' teams of
Olivia Schoppa (Gutersloh, Germany/Stadtisches Gymnasium Gutersloh) and
Laura Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Los Pinos) at two and
Vanessa Skouroukos (Toledo, Ohio/Waite H.S.) and
Luciana Merediz (Lima, Peru/Colegio Nuestra Senora del Carmen) at three.
In singles action, Schardt was involved in the tightest match at three, falling 7-5, 6-1 while Chela fell 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the order. Schoppa and Ortiz each dropped 6-0, 6-2 decisions at second and fourth singles respectively while Skouroukos lost a 6-1, 6-0 contest at the fifth spot. Merediz rounded out the lineup with a 6-0, 6-0 setback.
Lourdes (3-9) will wrap up the regular season next Saturday as the Gray Wolves battle Cornerstone. Action begins at 1 p.m. at Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club in East Lansing, Mich.
