The 2023-2024 regular season came to an end for Lourdes on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves dropped a 6-1 match to Cornerstone at Sparrow Michigan Athletic Club in East Lansing, Mich.
"The sophomores competed with a fighting spirit, using the opportunity to learn from the defending conference championships," head coach
Epifani Jones said afterwards. "They are mentally, physically, and tactically preparing for the future."
The Gray Wolves picked up a win by default at third doubles by Cornerstone (10-6, 5-1 WHAC) won at the top two spots.
Bella Chela (Lusaka, Zambia/Pretoria H.S. for Girls) and
Mallory Schardt (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) fell 6-0 at the top of the lineup while
Olivia Schoppa (Gutersloh, Germany/Stadtisches Gymasium Gutersloh) and
Laura Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia/Gimnasio Los Pinos) fell by the same score at the second spot.
In singles, the Gray Wolves won by default at numbers while the Golden Eagles won the other five contests in straight sets. Chela led off falling 6-2, 6-0 while Schoppa dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision at second singles. Schardt fell 6-1, 6-3 at number three while Ortiz dropped a 6-1, 6-0 contest at four.
Luciana Merediz (Lima, Peru/Colegio Nuestra Senora del Carmen) lost by the same score at fifth singles.
Lourdes (3-10, 1-5) will take part in the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament on Monday, April 22. The league will announce official pairings later in the weekend.
