The Lourdes University men's tennis team won a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament match for the first time in program history on Monday, defeating Aquinas 5-2 at Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
"The character of these six men is beginning to define the end of the season," head coach
Epifani Jones said afterwards. "They have connected as teammates and solidified as partners and I'm excited to see them elevate their play in the next round."
The fifth-seeded Gray Wolves opened the match by securing the doubles point. After earning a win by default at third doubles,
Victor Dieltiens (Altea, Spain/Sint Eduardus [Belgium]) and
Alvaro Trillo-Sanchez (Madrid, Spain/Churchill County H.S. [Nev.]) secured the point with a 6-3 victory at second doubles. Lourdes' top team of
Joshua Parish (Columbus, Ohio/Cristo Rey H.S.) and
Jaden Coley (Columbus, Ohio/Reynoldsburg H.S.) trailed 6-5 when their match was stopped.
In singles, Aquinas (4-12), the sixth seed, defaulted at the sixth spot, giving Lourdes a 2-0 lead before Parish cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at the second spot.
Aryan Mittal (Ghaziabad, India/DPS Indirapuram) secured the victory for the Gray Wolves with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at number three singles.
The remaining three matches were still played to completion, with Trillo-Sanchez posting a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at fifth singles. The Saints picked wins at first and fourth singles. Dieltiens fell in a match tie-break 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-5 at the top of the order while
Luis Guzman (Santo Domingo, D.R./Cranston East [R.I.] H.S.) dropped a three-set match 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 at the fourth spot.
Lourdes (6-10) advances to the second round where the Gray Wolves will battle fourth-seeded Indiana Tech on Wednesday. The match will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
