GOSHEN, Ind. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University women's soccer team (1-0-0) was victorious in it's 2024 campaign season opener, earning a 2-0 win over Goshen College Saturday, Aug. 31, at the In Gold Complex.
Scoring in her career debut was freshman
Rachel Nelson who found the back of the net in the 30th minute of action. The goal, assisted by graduate student
Karlie Heilman, marks as the first for Nelson.
Sophomore
Taylir Lynam drew a penalty in the 37th minute of the first half to secure the win with a penalty kick goal. The strike was the local Sylvania native's sixth career goal.
Defensively, senior
Emmy Rodger turned in a clean sheet with 10 shots faced, saving six in the first 45 minutes of play and four in the second.
Match Notes:
- Head Coach Jackie Phillip's (60-79-19) earned her first season victory and her 60th career win at the helm of the program, in which she started in 2015.
- The season opening win marked the fifth time in program history the team has opened a season victorious. Additionally, it was the first season opening road win since the 2018 season when the team defeated La Roche University, 4-0 in Pittsburgh.
- The win over Goshen was the first in the match series that dates back to 2021, as prior to Saturday's meeting, the series record was 1-0-2, in favor of the Maple Leafs.
- In goal for the first time this season was senior Emmy Rodger, who turned in her 26th career clean sheet.
- Three Gray Wolves debuted in their first career match including, Nelson, Payton Childers, and Sydney Hall.
- Five players tested the opposing keeper, as freshman's Nelson and Childers produced a shot on frame, as well as Lynam, junior Molly Anderson, and senior Ellen Kolodin.
- The two goals marks the first time this season the Gray Wolves have scored multiple times in a single match. Last season, Lourdes accomplished the feat six times.

Lourdes will return home for a 1 pm exhibition against Point Park University Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Wildcat Stadium before opening the home schedule with Holy Cross University Saturday, Sept. 7 at 4 pm, in conjunction with the men's team who will finish the second half of the double-header againts Holy Cross at 7 pm.
