TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The Lourdes University women's volleyball team opened the 2024 campaign at "The Showdown In the Woods Invitational presented by the Terre Haute Convention & Visitors Bureau", Friday-Saturday, Aug. 30-31, where the Gray Wolves picked up a season-opener victory.
MATCH 1
Day one of the tournament hosted by Saint Mary of the Woods College, saw the Gray Wolves defeat Boyce College with a clean sweep to start the 2024 season, 1-0. The team started strong, winning 25-15, 25-11, and 25-17.
Key contributors in the win included redshirt senior
Alex Pak, who led with 13 kills on 17 attempts for an impressive .733 hitting clip. Leading in assists for the Gray Wolves was
Katey Stakolich, who earned 19. Junior
Kenady Cox helped on 13 kills, while earning the sole block solo of the match.
Defensively, sophomore
Arleena Willer picked up double digits digs, earning a clean 12 on the match with no reception errors.
As a team, Lourdes produced 39 kills on 63 swings, good for a .476 hitting percentage.
MATCH 2
The second match of the day included Lourdes and Clarke University, who took a tough 3-2 battle over the Gray Wolves to see Lourdes' record move to 1-1. The Pride took an early 1-0 lead, winning the first set 25-15, before the Gray Wolves turned the table, taking the second set 25-15. Continuing the back and forth, Clarke took set three, 25-23 and Lourdes claimed set four, 25-21. The deciding set fell into the hands of Clarke Pride, taking the ultimate five-set thriller, 15-13.
This time, leading the pack was redshirt junior,
Lindsey Pumford, who chalked up a .478 hitting clip with 12 kills on 23 total attacks. Cox exploded on offense, assisting on 22 attacks and contributing four service aces. Additionally, freshman
Rania Pavlidi made her debut, collecting 15 assists and two digs.
Defensively, Lourdes had two players earn double-digit digs as junior
Jolie Sobb bolstered 20 digs, while senior
Maddie White earned 10. Additionally, the team earned 8 block assists.
MATCH 3
The second day of the Showdown in the Woods had Lourdes winning the first match with a clean sweep over Alice LLoyd College, 25-11, 25-14, and 25-18.
Producing a team-leading nine kills was Pak, while redshirt junior
Rachel Allison followed behind with seven. Cox did most of the assisting, earning a team-leading 14, while Pavlidi earned 12 for her second career double-digit assist performance.
Sobb showed an impressive serving day, producing five service aces in the loss, while also leading in digs with 13.
MATCH 4
The closing match of the tournament for the Gray Wolves was against host Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, where Lourdes fell in three, 25-15, 25-14, 25-19.
Pavlidi "took off" from a setting standpoint, collecting her third career double-digit assist match with 14, one off her career best. Willer led defensively with 17 digs on the match.
UP NEXT
The Gray Wolves will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 4, as Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play will begin starting with Lourdes and Siena Heights University. The first serve is set for 7 pm in Adrian, Mich.
