Box Score Lourdes University volleyball delivered an early-season thriller on Saturday afternoon, rallying to defeat Saint Xavier (Ill.) in a five-set clash that showcased the Gray Wolves' depth, composure, and aggressive serving.
Senior
Rachel Allison led the charge with 14 kills and 3 aces, while
Aleya Baptiste powered through with 12 kills and 5 aces to pace a relentless Lourdes attack.
Jolie Sobb and
Mia Karl provided steady contributions at the net, while setter
Zoe Schuele distributed the ball with precision, racking up over 40 assists on the evening.
The deciding fifth set swung decisively Lourdes' way thanks to a blistering service run from
Iliana Karkabasis, who fired in three consecutive aces that pushed the Gray Wolves into a commanding lead they never surrendered.
Head coach
Greg Reitz pointed to his team's energy and serving pressure as the difference-makers.
"The level of energy didn't drop, which allowed us to force them to change their strategy," Reitz said. "Our pressure from the back line with the aces was huge, not allowing their setters to run a comfortable offense. That was critical for us in just our second match."
Reitz also credited the fundamentals that steadied his squad throughout the five-set test.
"Passing and our setters were key to our success today," he added.
With the victory, Lourdes improves to 2–0 on the young season and showcased its ability to battle through adversity, leaning on aggressive serving and strong ball control to topple the Cougars.
